MAC Wrestler of the Week

Joe Tymoszczuk, Kent State - Junior, Solon, Ohio (Lake Catholic High School)

Filling in for an injured Brendan Barlow, junior Joe Tymoszczuk went 2-0 on the weekend, including a dual-deciding upset of Ohio's Andy Hartshorn.  Tymoszczuk, a walk-on, who joined the team in December, stepped onto the mat in Athens with his team trailing 16-14, having only wrestled in one dual all season.  Hartshorn was 21-9 and ranked third in the MAC, but Tymoszczuk earned the opening takedown, a pair of two-point near falls and held on for the 11-10 victory.  Tymoszczuk also defeated Eastern Michigan's David Wade, who was ranked fourth in the MAC.  Tymoszczuk scored a takedown in overtime to earn a 7-5 win.

Additional Nominees:

Tyler Grayson, Central Michigan - Senior, Gladstone, Mo. (Winnetonka High School)

Senior Tyler Grayson pinned No. 19 John-Martin Cannon of Buffalo in the 165-pound bout last Sunday. It was Grayson's third victory this season against an opponent currently ranked in the InterMat top 20. The fall, Grayson's first of the season, helped lead No. 6 CMU to a 35-3 win over the Bulls. Grayson improved to 15-5 overall with the victory.

Corey Phillips, Eastern Michigan - Sophomore, Canton, Mich. (Canton High School)

Sophomore Corey Phillips won his first MAC match of the year with a 6-1 decision over Kent State's Chase Skonieczny at 141 lbs last Sunday. Phillips was one of only two Eagles to capture a victory in the loss.  Phillips is 12-11 on the year, 1-2 in the MAC.

Gabe Ramos, Ohio - Freshman, Hopatcong, N.J. (Hopatcong High School)

Redshirt freshman Gabe Ramos had a terrific weekend for the Bobcats, posting a 2-0 record in dual meets against No. 20 Kent State and West Virginia. Ramos took a 5-1 decision over Kent State's Troy Opfer, a wrestler that had bested him at the Virginia Duals just a month prior. He then took an exciting 8-7 decision over West Virginia's Shane Young to get the Bobcats off to a second consecutive fast start. In a weekend of dual meets with multiple ranked wrestlers, Ramos was a clutch performer at a weight that appeared to be a toss-up in each dual meet.
