MAC Wrestler of the Week
John-Martin Cannon, Buffalo - Sophomore, Brockport, N.Y. (Brockport High School)
Sophomore John-Martin Cannon captured the 165-pound crown at the New York State Intercollegiate Wrestling Championships by upsetting 16th nationally-ranked Justin Kerber of Cornell, 3-1, in overtime. Posting a 4-0 record, Cannon captured the Bulls' lone individual crown of the championships. On Saturday, Cannon scored a fall followed by a major decision to reach the semifinals. In the semifinals, the sophomore posted a 6-4 decision over Matt Kaylor of Binghamton in the second overtime period to reach the championships. After finishing in third place last year, Cannon earned his first trip to the finals where he would record the biggest victory of his career, defeating 16th nationally-ranked Kerber of Cornell in the first overtime period, 3-1.

Matt Steintrager, Central Michigan - Senior, Westland, Mich. (Detroit Catholic Central High School)
Senior Matt Steintrager earned his first career MAC victory by pinning Eastern Michigan's Greg Egbert in the second period last Thursday. The fall came at the 4:14 mark and gave Central Michigan an early 6-0 lead in an eventual 34-3 victory. Steintrager improved to 14-2 on the season with the win, while Central Michigan improved to 10-2 overall.
Obie Simpson, Kent State - Senior, Chicago, Ill.
Senior Obie Simpson recorded a first period pin against Northern Illinois' John Oden to ingnite a rally for the Flashes in a 29-9 win over the Huskies. Simpson, a 165-pound runner-up at last year's MAC Championship, is 15-12 this season with two pins.
Erik Schuth, Ohio - Junior, Spencerport, N.Y. (Brockport High School)
Junior Erik Schuth earned a convincing victory in Ohio's only dual meet of the week, defeating American's Kenneth Clessas in a Bobcat loss. Schuth pinned the Eagles' 197-pounder in only 81 seconds, earning his 20th victory of the season and extending his spotless dual meet streak to 10-0. Schuth has now won five straight bouts and 10 of his last 11.
Alex Ortman, Eastern Michigan - Sophomore, Temperance, Mich. (Bedford High School)
Sophomore Alex Ortman turned in the lone victory of the match for the Eagles against Central Michigan in last Thursday in a 34-3 loss. Ortman defeated Donnie Corby, 4-3, at 157 lbs. for the first conference victory of his career. Ortman also pinned Nick Smith of Indianapolis at 1:56 in a win over the Greyhounds to go 2-0 on the week.
