MAC Men’s Indoor Track Athlete Of The Week

Destin Heasley, Kent State    

Event: Kent State Tune-Up         

Men's 800 meters; 1:49.77, 1st NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 1:49.77           

Heasley won the men’s 800 meters with a career-best 1:49.77 at the Kent State Tune-Up (2/21). That mark is the fastest time on the Mid-American Conference in the 2009 Indoor Track and Field season. Heasley’s time is also a provisional qualifying time for the 2009 NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships.


MAC Men’s Indoor Field Athlete of the Week

Alex Stamatakis, Buffalo        

Event: Akron Open

Shot put; 58-7.25 (17.86m); 2nd weight throw; 57-3 (17.45m); 7th           

Extended his school record in the shot put with an additional 3.5 inches. Improved his NCAA provisional qualifying distance in the shot put. Finished second to an Ohio State athlete who also provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships. Stamatakis has set the UB shot put record three times in the past month. The record has increased by more than two feet since the beginning of the season.


MAC Women’s Indoor Track Athlete Of The Week

Amber Williams, Ball State     

Event: Ball State Quadrangular   

60m Hurdles - First Place 8.29; 60m - First Place 7.45; 200m -- Second Place 25.22           

This is the second time in her career Williams has provisionally qualified for the NCAA meet in the 60m hurdles. In 2007 she placed 15th at the NCAA Championships in the event, after winning the MAC Championship with a school-record time of 8.19


MAC Women’s Indoor Field Athlete of the Week

Stevi Large, Akron

Event: Zips Invitational   

Large won the shot put (55-1.50) and the weight throw (67-11). In the shot, she beat second place by eight feet. In the shot put, Large shattered her own school and Stile Field House record, previously being 52-8.25. She additionally moved from 18th to 3rd in the NCAA rankings and now ranks second on the MAC all-time performer list in the shot. For the weight throw, it marked the fifth time she has surpassed at least an NCAA provisional mark. Overall, with a throw of 69-8.75, Large ranks third in the NCAA
