BOWLING GREEN ? The University of Akron women extended its day one lead and the Zips men vaulted into first at the 2008 Mid-American Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Champions on day two include senior Cadeau Kelley (long jump), freshman Cassie Schenck (steeplechase) and freshman Tyler Sweet (javelin).
The women, through eight events over two days, have 96 points, 57 points ahead of second-place Buffalo (39), Ohio (34), Kent State (30), Central Michigan (26), Western Michigan (25), BGSU (22), Ball State (16), Eastern Michigan (15), Miami (6), Toledo (3) and Northern Illinois (0).
The men, in third after day one, now have 74 points through eight events scored, leading second-place Miami by six points (68) and perennial champion Eastern Michigan by 12 (62).
A majority of day two saw the running of preliminary races in the 100 through 1500-meter runs. However, Akron was able to increase its lead on the women’s side and move into first on the men’s side thanks to strong performances in field events and the multi events.
