WMU's Bavaird Named Women's Golfer of the Week

Senior golfer Laura Bavaird captured her first collegiate individual title in the spring of 2007 earning medalist honors at the William & Mary Invitational.  She took no time at all to add to her trophy case, earning medalist honors at the season-opening MAC Preview Tournament held at The Brickyard. Bavaird, who answered her opening-round 72 with a 2-under-par 70, made three birdies to be exact, including a 10-foot downhill putt that broke right to left on her final hole.  She needed that birdie as earn margin of victory was just one stroke. She finished the tournament with a 142.

Stephany Fleet (Dewitt, Mich.-Dewitt) who tied for second place after firing a school-record 143 (69-74). Her score of 143 broke the previous EMU 36-hole record of 145 set just last year by Fleet at the Saluki Invitational, March 25-26.Fleet got the 2007-08 campaign off on the right foot, as she fired a career-low 69 during the tournament’s opening round. Overall the second place finish is her ninth-career top 10 finish in 21 career events. The Eastern Michigan University women's golf team carded a 301 in the final round of the NIU Brickyard Invitational to capture a one-stoke victory in the 11-team field here Tuesday at Brickyard Crossing Golf Course. The Eagles posted a score of 600 for the tournament (299-301).

 

Jessica McCann ? Bowling Green ? Sr. ? Mason, Ohio

McCann finished sixth at the Brickyard Invitational after carding a 36 hole score of 151. She opened the tournament with a 74 and finished with a 77.

 

Kirsty O'Connor ? Ball State ? So. ? Burnley, Lancashire, U.K. (Habergham)

Sophomore Kirsty O'Connor posted a two-under par round of 70 on Tuesday to tie for second overall at the MAC Tournament Preview event. O'Connor's 36-hole score of 143 sets a new BSU school record for 36 holes, bettering the 146 set by Kallie Harrison in 2006. Ball State, the first-round leader, placed second by one stroke to Eastern Michigan in the 11-team event.

 

Erica Rivard ? Toledo ? Fr. ? Tecumseh, ONT (Belle River District)

Led Rockets in both tournaments in first tournaments of her collegiate career. Finished tied for 19th in the Mary Fossum Invitational with 230 (78-77-75) and tied for 11th at the MAC Tournament Preview with a 152 (73-79).

 

Katie Stafford ? Ohio ? Sr. ? Phoenix, Ariz.

Top finisher for Ohio in the event. The 152 (76, 76 ) was her career-best 36-hole performance and the tie for 11th place was the best finish of her career.
