On the opening night of the 2007 MAC Women’s Swimming and Diving Championship held at Eastern Michigan, Miami clinched first place in the 200 yard medley relay; clocking in at 1:44.11, shattering the MAC championship meet record (1.44.14) previously set by Ohio in 2000.
The RedHawks relay team consisted of senior Margaret Patrick (23.06), sophomore Malarie Schmidt (27.26) and freshmen Karen Frazier (28.50) and Allison Way (25.29). Ohio took second place with a time of 1:44.64 followed by Bowling Green in third (1:44.94), Toledo placed fourth (1:45.42) while Eastern Michigan rounded out the top five, clocking in at 1:45.81. Akron (1:45.86), Ball State (1:46.36) and Buffalo (1:46.39) finished sixth, seventh and eighth respectively.
Madeleine Pilchard, Alissa Richard, Hannah Burandt and Steph Cholyk of Eastern Michigan took home top honors in the 800 yard freestyle relay, setting new MAC and MAC championship meet records (7.21.80). Both records were previously held by Ohio set in 1990. Eastern Michigan’s time also qualified as a NCAA “B” cut time.
The 2007 MAC Women’s Swimming and Diving Championship will continue tomorrow, February 15 at 11 a.m. in the Jones Natatorium.
