MAC Wrestler of the Week
Kevin Smith, Buffalo-Junior, Mexico, N.Y. (Mexico High School)
Buffalo junior Kevin Smith dominated his match at 133 pounds and took a major decision with a 14-5 win over Dustin Reed of Oklahoma at the Oklahoma duals last Friday afternoon. Smith then followed it up with an individual title at the prestigious Oklahoma Gold Classic on Saturday, coming out unscathed with four straight wins to take the 133-pound bracket. His wins included a rematch victory over Reed of Oklahoma, a 6-0 shutout win over Jordan Thome of Army and a commanding win over Reed's Oklahoma teammate Jordan Keller in the championship match, 9-3.
Desi Green, Buffalo-Junior, Henrietta, N.Y. (Rush-Henrietta High School)
Buffalo junior Desi Green earned his second tournament title in as many weeks, taking the 149-pound title at the Oklahoma Gold Classic with four straight wins. The Henrietta, NY native, wrestling just minutes in Brockport, came out with a purpose and beat Dexter Lederer of Maryland, 8-2, in a tough opening draw. It didn't get any easier in round two, however, as Green faced three-time New Hampshire state champion Alex Smith of Army and won 8-2 as well. He then faced his first nationally ranked wrestler of the day, fourteenth ranked Mario Mason of Rutgers. Green had another great victory, a 4-1 decision to move to the finals. He capped off a busy day with a 4-3 win over Anthony White of Clarion in the title match.
Mike LeHolm, Eastern Michigan-Freshman, Jackson, Mich. (Jackson Northwest High School)
Eastern Michigan redshirt freshman Mike LeHolm, who placed second last week at the Eastern Michigan Open, took fourth this week at 141-lbs. in the open division at the Michigan State Open. The redshirt freshman breezed past his first two opponents with a first round pin of former MAC champion, Pat McLemore (NIU), at 2:29 followed by a 6-1 second round decision over Alex Warren of Indiana. After falling to Purdue's Juan Archuleta, LeHolm bounced back to defeat returning All-American Cashe Quiroga of Purdue, 2-1, and advance to the third place match. It went the distance and then some as Matt Irwin of the University of Indianapolis took the bout with a slim 2-1 overtime decision.
Dustin Kilgore, Kent State-- Junior, Berea, Ohio (Berea High School)
Kent State junior Dustin Kilgore won the 197-pound title at the Hokie Open last weekend, defeating No. 10 Jerome Ward of Iowa State in the finals. Kilgore is off a 5-0 start in dual meets, including a 9-1 major decision over No. 17 Mike Salopek of Virginia. Dating back to January of 2009, Kilgore has won in 35 consecutive dual meets. Kilgore is off to a 9-0 start with two technical falls and four major decisions.
Brad Dieckhaus, Northern Illinois-Junior, St. Charles, Mo. (Francis Howell Central High School)
Northern Illinois junior Brad Dieckhaus had an impressive showing in his return to the mat after a year absence. He posted a 3-1 record at the Michigan State Open, winning his first three matches at 184 over Big Ten Conference opponents, and advanced to the championship match. Dieckhaus knocked off Illinois' Dan Steller by a 5-0 decision, then dispatched of Ohio State's Peter Capone, 4-2, in his second match. He posted a victory over Lee Munster of Northwestern to advance to the first place match against A.J. Kissel of Purdue. He was edged out by the No. 5 ranked wrestler, 6-4, to take second place.
Brad Squire, Ohio-Freshman, Wadsworth, Ohio (Wadsworth High School)
Ohio freshman Brad Squire captured the 149 pound title in the freshman/sophomore bracket of the Michigan State Open last weekend. Squire pinned David Bolger of Tiffin, defeated Ohio State's Alex Gordon 6-2, topped Cleveland State's Brandon Summers 12-4 and Manchester's Cameryn Brady 12-2. Squire captured the title by knocking off Purdue's Frankie Porras 20-5.
