MAC Announces Volleyball Academic All-MAC Team

Updated 1/3/2011
CLEVELAND, OHIO -- The Mid-American Conference announced its 2010 Volleyball Academic All-MAC team Monday, as voted by faculty athletic representatives at MAC institutions. A total of 18 student-athletes were named to the team. The number of honorees on the MAC All-Academic Team is the number that is set for the specific sport or 33% of the number of nominees, whichever is greater.

Leading this year's team was Marisa Hornbaker of Buffalo and Michelle Jantsch who were named to the Academic All-MAC team for the third time in their careers. This is the most a student-athlete can be named to the team because freshmen do not qualify for this honor.

Seven student-athletes were named to the team for the second consecutive season: Lauren Krupsky of Central Michigan, Haley Stein of Eastern Michigan, Michele Metzler of Miami, Kristin Hoffman and Allison McGlaughlin of Northern Illinois, Sue Jacobi of Ohio and Allyson Doyle of Western Michigan.

Defensive Player of the Year Alyssa Rio of Ball State was named to the team along with teammate Brittany McGinnis. Also joining their teammates were Kristin Bignell of Buffalo, Rachel Iaquaniello of Eastern Michigan, Katie Post of Ohio and Jessica Brown and Sam Viox of Western Michigan. Ashley Herzberg of Bowling Green and Lauren Jones of Kent State also represented their teams.

The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.
