MAC Wrestler of the Week
Danny Mitcheff, Kent State University - Senior, Lorain, Ohio (Elyria High School)
For the second straight weekend Mitcheff won a tournament title by going 4-0 last Saturday at the Body Bar Invitational in Ithaca, N.Y. Mitcheff recorded an opening round pin of Binghamton's Rob Slavin followed by 5-3 win over Maryland's Mookie Golden. After a comeback overtime victory against Steve Mytych of Drexel, Mitcheff downed 18th-ranked Kevin Smith of Buffalo 6-3 in the finals. The 133-pound bracket also included No. 7 Mike Grey of Cornell, who fell to Smith in the semifinals. Mitcheff improved to 10-0 on the season and ran his career win total to 107.
Kevin Smith, Buffalo- Sophomore, Mexico, N.Y. (Mexico High School)
Sophomore Kevin Smith rattled off three straight victories and finished in second place at the Body Bar Invitational at Cornell last weekend. Smith continues to make his climb up the national rankings in the 133-pound weight class. In the latest USA Today/Intermat/NWCA Division I National Individual Rankings, Smith has moved up to the 11th spot. In order to reach the championship bout, Smith faced off against sixth nationally-ranked Mike Grey of host Cornell, a 2008 All-American. Smith dominated Grey throughout the match to earn his spot in the championship bout with an 8-5 decision.
David Wade, Eastern Michigan- Senior, Beavercreek, Ohio (Beavercreek High School)
David Wade improved his season record to 5-2 (3-1 in duals) last Sunday with a 4-0 shutout over Northwestern's Ben Kuhar in an 18-18 tie with the Wildcats. Earlier in the week (Thursday, Nov. 19), Wade pinned Cleveland State's Chris Weber at the 2:56 mark to put the Eagles up 12-0 in an eventual 36-6 rout of the Vikings.
