Steve Brown ? Central Michigan (Hermon, N.Y./Hermon-Dekalb Central HS).
Junior - 149 pounds
Brown was named Most Outstanding Wrestler at the Brockport/Oklahoma Gold Classic. He won four straight matches to claim the 149-pound title. Seeded fourth, he upset No. 1 seed Will Rowe (Oklahoma) in the semis, 5-3, then posted a 7-4 decision over No. 2 seed Matt Kyler (Army) in the finals. Rowe and Kyler entered the season ranked eighth and sixth, respectively, in the country.
David Wade ? Eastern Michigan (Beavercreek, Ohio/Beavercreek)
Redshirt Sophomore - Hwt.
Wade went 2-2 at last Saturday's Boilermaker Challenge en route to a 5th place finish. Wade dec. Pat Walsh (OSU) 11-5; and dec. Roy Dragon (OD) 3-1. He was beaten by Nate Everhart (IND) 4-1, and Chad Bleske (UM) 4-1.
Dustin Kilgore ? Kent State (Berea, Ohio/Berea)
Redshirt Freshman ? 184 pounds
Wrestling in his first collegiate nine-open tournament, Kilgore served notice to the rest of the country. Kilgore won the 184-pound bracket at the Brockport/Oklahoma Gold Tournament with three wins in less than 11 minutes total mat time. In the first round, he defeated Derek Stanley of Army by fall in 1:32. After a 9-2 decision over Vince DiDona in the semifinals, Kilgore pinned Shawn Fendone of Edinboro in the championship match in 1:51.
Tommy Weinkam ? Ohio (Cincinnati, Ohio/Moeller)
Redshirt Freshman - 165 pounds
Weinkam won the gold at 165 pounds in the Freshman/Sophomore division of the Michigan State Open, going 4-0 in the Bobcats' first event of the season. Weinkam won a close 7-5 decision over Eric Moon of Oakland University in the first round and then won shutout decisions over competitors from Indiana and Buffalo. He then defeated Daniel Yates of Hesperia High School, 5-0, in the gold medal match.
