MAC Announces Men's Swimming & Diving Academic All-MAC Team

18 Student-Athletes from six schools honored

Cleveland, Ohio - The Mid-American Conference announced its 2010 Academic All-MAC Men's Swimming & Diving team today, as voted by faculty athletic representatives at MAC institutions.  A total of 18 student-athletes from six schools were named to the team. 

Three seniors were honored for the third time in their career-Ben Karwoski of Ball State, and Andrew Tamchyna and Connor Vander Zalm of Buffalo.  Four other selections are repeat performers from last year's academic squad-Mark Golden (Ball State), Jordan Matthews (Buffalo), Scott Murphy (Eastern Michigan) and Dave Brown (Miami).

Ball State, Buffalo and Southern Illinois each led the way with four selections.  Representing Ball State is Jordan Rantz and Ryan Gordyan, in addition to Mark Golden and Ben Karwoski.  Buffalo had Chris Berloth joining Jordan Matthews, Andrew Tamchyna and Connor Vander Zalm.  Southern Illinois was represented by Chris Gaffney, Matt Kruse, Jameson Kuper and Matt Parsons. 

MAC Champion Eastern Michigan had three selections with Carlos Nunez and Gilles Renard joining Scott Murphy.  Evansville had two honorees with Andrew Balczo and Colin Gray, while Miami had one honoree, Dave Brown.

The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics.  To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport.  First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.  Outstanding academic and athletic accomplishments for the current season are only considered.
