Women’s Golfer of the Week
Tara Delaney, Jr., Kent State, Carlow, Ireland (Gaelcholaiste Cheatharlach)
Delaney recorded her third career tournament championship, claiming the title at the Lady Northern Invitational, finishing with a 1-under 215, to win by four strokes. Delaney posted a 1-over 73 in the final round, after shooting an even-par 72 and a 2-under 70 in the opening rounds. She paced the Golden Flashes to a fifth-place team finish. Delaney was the lone golfer under par in the event. Her previous tournament victories had come at the Northwestern Invitational and the MAC Championship last spring. It marked the second straight year a KSU golfer has won this tournament, with Becky Wood claiming the individual crown last fall.
Laura Bavaird, Jr., Western Michigan, Grosse Ile, Mich. (Grosse Ile)
Bavaird carded three rounds in the 70's to lead the Western Michigan golf team at the Jeannine McHaney Intercollegiate Invitational in Lubbock, Texas. Bavaird scored a 77 in the opening round and followed with a 78 to conclude day one. She finished up with a 4-over-par 76 on the final day to earn a tie for 36th at the competitive event.
Jessica McCann, Jr., Bowling Green, Mason, Ohio (Mason)
McCann fired a 3-over 147 (73-74) en route to a medalist finish at the YSU/Taco Bell Invitational this past week. The Mason, Ohio native became the first Falcon since 2002 to earn medalist honors, when Jessica Schnipke finished first at the EKU Invitational. The junior's 73 was a career-best, breaking her 75 set last year at the MAC Championships. her 147 was also just two strokes shy of the school record, set in 2002 by Jenny Schnipke. Also of note, McCann led the Falcons to the YSU/Taco Bell Invitational crown with a team score of 626, 10 strokes better than second-place finisher Detroit.
