-- Steve Jaksa signed a four-year contract extension with Central Michigan University, extending his tenure as head baseball coach through the 2014 season, CMU Athletics Director Dave Heeke announced on Monday.

"Continuity and stability are key ingredients to success and I'm pleased that Steve will continue to provide the vision and leadership for our baseball program," Heeke said. "Steve is a Chippewa, through and through. He wore the Maroon and Gold as a player and is incredibly passionate about helping CMU reach the highest level. Last season's Mid-American Conference championship was an outstanding accomplishment and illustrates that Chippewa Baseball continues to be an elite-level program."

After winning his second MAC title and third West Division crown in eight seasons, Jaksa's career record now sits at 263-193-1. He also saw two more players join the highest ranks of professional baseball in 2010, bringing his career total to 15 players drafted or signed by a Major League Baseball franchise since he took over as head coach in 2003.

"It means a lot to me personally, as well as my staff, that Dave Heeke and Central Michigan have this level of confidence in the direction and vision the program," Jaksa said. "It's a tremendous and humbling honor. Being the head coach of this program is a privilege, and I'm excited for the opportunity to continue the great winning tradition here at Central Michigan."

Jaksa's win total ranks third all-time in program history, as does his winning percentage (.577) among head coaches with at least 100 games in the Maroon and Gold.

CMU is 128-77 in Mid-American Conference play under Jaksa's guidance, finishing first or second in the West Division in five of the past seven seasons. In addition to the division and overall titles, CMU has advanced to a pair of MAC Tournament championship games (2005, 2010).

Athletically, 26 individuals have earned All-MAC status under Jaksa, including one MAC Freshman of the Year award, one MAC Player of the Year honor and two MAC Pitcher of the Year honorees. Additionally, six Chippewas have earned all-region honors and three have earned All-America accolades. CMU has also had three Freshman All-Americans during Jaksa's tenure.

CMU ‘s success has carried over into the classroom during Jaksa's tenure as well. Fifteen individuals have earned Academic All-MAC honors, five have garnered Academic All-District IV recognition and three were named Academic All-Americans.

Jaksa earned MAC Coach of the Year honors in 2004.
