For Immediate Release-Wednesday, March 10, 2010
MAC Women's Tennis Player of the Week
Jeremie Benjamin, Akron - Junior, Indianapolis, Ind. (North Central High School)
Junior Jeremie Benjamin posted a 4-0 combined record (2-0 singles, 2-0 doubles) on Saturday to help the Zips to 7-0 home victories over both Cincinnati and IUPUI in double-header action. Benjamin was dominant as she lost only seven total games, (two in doubles, five in singles) in her four matches. The four wins moved the junior into the top-20 career combined wins rankings in program history and also helped the then 67th nationally-ranked Zips to their first 8-0 start since 1991-92. The win over Cincinnati was the first over the Bearcats since 1992 and ended a five-match losing streak to the school. Akron earned its third-consecutive win and shutout over IUPUI.
Yumi Matsuto, Western Michigan - Senior, Kobeshi, Japan
Senior Yumi Matsuto won both of her matches at No. 31 Yale to become the 40th player in school history to reach 100 career wins. Matsuto and freshman Jill Pastunink teamed to win 8-5 at No. 2 doubles and then Matsuto earned Western Michigan's lone point with a come-from-behind victory over Stevi Petrelli 3-6, 7-6, 1-0 (7) at No. 4 singles. Matsuto leads the team with a 9-5 record in dual doubles and is 6-6 this season in dual singles and now has 101 career wins at WMU in just under three seasons after transferring from Division II California (Pa.).
