- The 2011 MAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships began Thursday at Northern Illinois University with Akron leading the men's competition with 40 points and a 22-point cushion over Kent State and Eastern Michigan while Kent State tops the women's side with 29 points to hold a four-point margin over second-place Miami.
On a day largely dedicated to field events, Kent State's Matt Pfleger took home the first title in the men's hammer throw with a toss of 209-8 (63.92m) while Shant'e White of Buffalo followed in the women's event with a throw of 206-4 (62.90m), nearly breaking the two-year old record mark of former Akron All-American Stevi Large.
In the day's next competition, Jessica Hemingway of Eastern Michigan won the pole vault, getting over the bar at a height of 13-4.25 (4.07m). Kim Preston of Kent State finished in second at 13-0.25 (3.97m). The Akron men's team began to flex its muscle in the javelin, with three Zips among the top four finishers. Senior Tyler Sweet won with a throw of 213-8 (65.12m), over ten feet better than second place Kyle Smith of Central Michigan. On the women's side, Miami freshman Victoria Paterra blew away the rest of the field with a throw of 160-9 (48.99m), besting the effort of Buffalo's Sara Oczypok by 27 feet to win her first MAC title.
In the evening's final two events, sophomore Terefe Ejigu of Eastern Michigan defended his men's 10,000 meters title in a time of 32:01.37 with teammate Austin Hendrix finishing in second while Rachel Patterson of Miami took the women's 10,000 meters with a burst in the final two laps to hold off Annie Beecham of Ohio with a final time of 35:13.69.
