MAC Women's Tennis Player of the Week

Mary Hill, Bowling Green - Sophomore, Munster, Ind.

Bowling Green sophomore Mary Hill went a perfect 4-0, with the match-clinching victories in each of Bowling Green's two wins over the weekend. The Falcons defeated both Eastern Michigan and arch-rival Toledo by identical 4-3 scores. Hill teamed with freshman Nikki Chiricosta for a pair of doubles wins, 8-1 vs. Eastern Michigan and 8-3 against Toledo.

In the Eastern Michigan match, Hill defeated Mariya Toncheva in three sets at the fourth flight, with the overall match tied, 3-3.  After losing, 6-1, in her opening set, Hill rallied for a 6-3 win in the second set, then rode that momentum to a fast start in the third set en route to a 6-1 win. Against Toledo's Kelsey Anonsen, Hill again posted a three-set win, this time, Hill's match was not the last one remaining on the court, but was one of two matches still going, with the Falcons needing to win one to take the overall match victory.  With the other Bowling Green player losing in her match, Hill again posted a dominant 6-1 win in the third set to clinch her team's victory.

The Falcons are now 13-7 in dual matches this year to date, and 4-3 in MAC matches after going 2-6 in league play a year ago.  Individually, Hill is 47-18 this year, with a 22-11 singles record and a 25-7 doubles mark and she leads the team in doubles wins. Her doubles win total is the fourth highest in Bowling Green history, while her combined win total ties her for sixth on the school single-season list.

Additional Nominees:

Stephanie Danesis, Miami - Junior, Akron, Ohio

Miami junior Stephanie Danesis played No. 2 in Miami's only match this week, a 7-0 win over Ball State. Danesis defeated her opponent 6-1, 6-0 for her 10th win in 11 outings and improved to 21-9 overall this year, including 16-4 in dual matches (5-1 in MAC play).  Danesis is 8-3 at No. 1 and 8-1 at No. 2 and teamed with Megan Martzolf for an 8-1 win at No. 1. They are now 15-5 overall this year, 4-2 in league play.  In the latest Campbell's/ITA rankings, they are listed at 79th in the country.

Alex Cristello, Toledo - Sophomore, Toronto, Canada

Toledo sophomore Alex Cristello boasted a perfect weekend following a 4-0 performance in Toledo's losses to Western Michigan and Bowling Green. Against the Broncos, Cristello and teammate Ashley Frey earned Toledo's lone doubles win in 8-6 fashion, while Cristello also earned Toledo's only point with a 6-4, 6-3 victory at fifth singles. In a much closer match against the Falcons, Cristello again won with Frey at No. 2 doubles (8-4) while picking up a 6-4, 7-6(5) win in the tiebreak of fifth singles. Cristello is now 20-11 overall in singles play and 8-2 since moving to the No. 5 slot.

Maria Nivia, Western Michigan - Junior, Cali, Colombia

Western Michigan junior Maria Nivia was a key contributor in Western Michigan's important wins this past weekend, going 4-0 overall in wins against Toledo (6-1) and Eastern Michigan (5-2).  All three teams entered the weekend with records of 3-2, but only the Broncos escaped with a pair of wins in bringing their season record to 5-2 in the MAC.  Against Toledo, Nivia teamed with Jill Pastunink to win the No. 3 doubles match 8-1, then went on to win the No. 3 singles match 6-2, 6-0.  Against Eastern Michigan, Nivia again paired with Pastunink to win the No. 2 doubles match, again by the score of 8-1.  Nivia would officially clinch the match victory for the Broncos in singles play, winning the No. 3 singles match 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (7-4).
