Ball State men's tennis team, which won the Mid-American Conference Tournament Championship Saturday after defeating Toledo 4-1, earned the school's seventh automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament under the direction of head men's tennis coach Bill Richards. The Cardinals will face the fourth-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes in Columbus, Ohio, Friday, May 13th.
"Obviously we are thrilled to be in the tournament," said Richards. "It is an honor to represent the Mid-American Conference although the draw is pretty tough the reality is that we got our work cut out for us. Ohio State is the No. 4 team in the nation and they have won multiple Big Ten championships. They have won 79 straight Big Ten matches. Again, we have our work cut out for us so we will get through finals this week and go to work and head over there and see if we can represent ourselves in a first class fashion."
The Cardinals will take a 15-14 overall mark to Columbus while the Buckeyes enter the match with a 31-2 record. The Buckeyes will be making their 12th appearance at the NCAA championships, all under current head coach Ty Tucker.
The championships will begin with regional action on campus sites May 13 with the round of 16 beginning May 19 at the Taube Tennis Center in Stanford, Calif. Ball State is scheduled to play Ohio State at 1 p.m.
