MAC Wrestler of the Week
Desi Green, Buffalo - Sophomore, Henrietta, N.Y. (Rush-Henrietta High School)
Sophomore Desi Green, the 20th nationally-ranked wrestler, posted a 3-0 record at the 2010 NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals and improved his career record at the National Duals to 5-0. In the Bulls' opening dual vs. ninth nationally-ranked Boise State on Saturday, Green faced sixth-ranked Jason Chamberlain of Boise State. Following two periods, Green and Chamberlain entered the last period tied at 5-5. In the third period, the two would exchange escapes before Green sealed the deal with a takedown to defeat Chamberlain, 8-6. In the Bulls' 18-17 upset of 12th nationally-ranked Nebraska, Green received a forfeit to give the Bulls' a 12-3 lead in the match to secure the Bulls' lead. Following Buffalo's upset of Nebraska, Green and his teammates would face seventh nationally-ranked Maryland. Despite the Bulls fall to the Terrapins, 31-7, Green earned one of the Bulls' two victories in the dual. In a repeat bout from this year's UB Open, Green would face off against Maryland's Jon Kohler. In the championship match at the UB Open, Green defeated the 2009 Edinboro Open champion, 10-7. Looking for the same result, Green would find what he was looking for as he defeated Kohler, 16-7 by major decision. Green's third-period performance made the difference in the bout as he compiled 10 points in the period. Prior to the Bulls' trip out to the Midwest, Green earned a 4-3 decision over Binghamton's Donnie Vinson in Buffalo's 19-16 defeat of the Bearcats. For the season, Green holds a 21-4 overall record and 10-1 dual meet record.
Jarod Trice, Central Michigan - Sophomore, Highland Park, Mich. (Highland Park High School)
Sophomore Jarod Trice won the heavyweight title at Midlands on Dec. 30, despite entering the tournament as the No. 8 seed. Trice defeated No. 1 seed Aaron Anspach (Nittany Lions WC) in the quarterfinals, 8-1, No. 4 seed Dom Bradley (Missouri) in the semis, 2-1, and David Zabriskie (Iowa State) in the finals, 3-2. Trice is Central Michigan's first Midlands champion since Wynn Michalak (197 pounds) in 2005. Trice's title helped the Chippewas to a third-place team finish at the tournament. Trice also won all three of his matches at National Duals on Jan. 9 to improve to 14-1 this season.
Aaron Sulzer, Eastern Michigan - Sophomore, Cleveland, Ohio (Holy Name High School)
Sophomore Aaron Sulzer helped Eastern Michigan win two of three matches Saturday, Jan. 9, at the Pitt Quad with a perfect 3-0 individual record. Sulzer recorded a pair of major decisions over Pitt's Mark Powell and Waynesburg's Alex Evanoff. Sulzer also defeated Matt Dunn of Columbia. He was the only Eagle to win in all three matches and his season record improves to 12-7. Eastern Michigan is 6-4-1 on the season.
Dustin Kilgore, Kent State - Sophomore, Berea, Ohio (Berea High School)
Sophomore Dustin Kilgore has gone 9-1 over the past two weeks, including a 5-0 mark at the Virginia Duals, where the Golden Flashes finished 4-1 as a team. Kilgore finished second at Southern Scuffle, going 4-1 with three first period pins. Kilgore also won three matches by major decision over the past two weeks and one by technical fall. Four of his nine wins came against nationally ranked opponents. On the season, Kilgore is 22-1 with 10 pins, three techs falls and four major decisions.
