Kent State Wraps Up 17th MAC Men's Golf Title

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.  ?With a 72-hole total of 1136 (294-280-271-291) the Kent State men’s golf team claimed its 17th Mid-American Conference Championship today at the Brickyard Crossing.  Sophomore John Hahn earned individual medalist honors for the Golden Flashes which shot a final round 291 today to win the team title by 19 strokes over Eastern Michigan. 


Hahn wins his first MAC title shooting a nine-under 279 (71-68-66-74) after a final round 74 on Saturday.  Two-over through 11 holes, he came roaring back with three straight birdies on 12, 13 and 14 before a double bogey on 18 ended the day.  He is the 15th different Golden Flash to win MAC medalist honors and the first since Marc Bourgeois and Tommy Wiegand shared the title in 2006 when Kent State won its last championship. 


Taking second place was sophomore Brett Cairns who shot a team best 71 today that included five birdies.  Cairns compiled a 283 to finish four shots back of Hahn.  With freshman Mackenzie Hughesfalling right behind, the Golden Flashes went 1-2-3 in the individual standings.  Hughes had four birdies in the final round before carding a 74 to end with a two-under 286


Senior Nick Latimer joined the trio on the All-Tournament team as he shot an even par 72 today.  Kent State’s only senior, Latimer claimed his second career top five finish with a 288 for the week. 


Kent State, which has won 13 of the last 18 MAC Championships, also won the event the last time it was contest at the Brickyard in 2006. 


The 2009 NCAA Regional pairings will be announced at 6:00 pm on Monday.
