MAC Wrestler of the Week (two honorees)
Central Michigan’s Mike Miller and Kent State’s Dustin Kilgore were recognized as this week’s MAC Wrestler of the Week for their performances at major tournaments. Kilgore won the 184 pound division at the Southern Scuffle, and Miller finished a close second at the nationally competitive Midlands Championship.
Mike Miller ? Central Michigan
Sophomore ? Uniontown, Ohio
Miller finished runner-up at 174 pounds at Midlands, where 10 of the Top 20 and six of the Top 10 ranked teams in the nation were competing. Seeded fifth, he went 5-1 at the tournament including a 6-3 decision over No. 1 seed (and No. 2 nationally ranked) Jay Borschel (Iowa) in the semifinals. In the finals against No. 3 seed (and No. 6 nationally ranked) Mike Cannon (American) Miller was originally credited with a takedown at the final buzzer that would have given him a 4-3 victory, but the officials eventually waved off the takedown. Miller is CMU's highest place finisher at Midlands since Wynn Michalak won the 197-pound title in 2005.
Dustin Kilgore - Kent State
R-Freshman ? Berea, Ohio (Berea HS)
Kilgore won six matches in impressive fashion en route to the 184-pound championship at the Southern Scuffle. Along the way, he recorded two pins in under a minute. In the finals, Kilgore dominated third-seeded Josh Patterson of Binghamton. Patterson is ranked 11th in the nation according to W.I.N. and 14th according to Intermat. Kilgore defeated Eddie Ebewo (East Stroudsburg) 10-5, Casey Caldwell (Navy) 6-2, Kurt Brendel (Princeton) fall in 29 seconds, Joe Budi (Old Dominion) tech fall 17-2, and Shawn Fendone (Edinboro) fall in 45 seconds, before beating Patterson 10-4.
Sean Clair ? Eastern Michigan
Senior ? Turtlecreek, Pa. (Plum)
At the Midlands Championship, Clair came up just shy of his fourth victory of the tournament against No. 5 ranked Connor Beebe of rival Central Michigan University, 5-4. He finished the tournament 3-2, which, aside from one other Eagle, was the only winning record of the tournament. After winning his opening round bout against conference foe Northern Illinois’ Tristen DeShazer by a 5-1 decision, he was edged by Todd Schravrein of Missouri, 4-3, which dropped him out of the championship bracket. Facing Northwestern’s Eric Galka, Clair used a 6-1 decision to keep himself alive in the tournament. He would end the first day by dusting Iowa State University’s Larmie Shaffer, 8-3.
Chris Iammarinio ? Ohio
At the Southern Scuffle, Chris Iammarino posted a 3-2 record for the Bobcats, dropping his first match to Charles Carafano of Navy, 5-4, and then reeling off three-straight wins over Campbell's Parker Burns, Gardner-Webb's Travis Porter and East Stroudsburg’s Shane Mallory. His run was stopped by 17th-ranked Cam Simaz of Cornell, the winning team this year. Iammarino is now 10-9 on the year, improving to 9-5 in tournament action.
