Specialist of the Week

Duyen Zu Vuong, Eastern Michigan, Sr., Ottawa, Ontario/DelaSalle

Senior gymnast Duyen Zu Vuong had the high mark of the afternoon, carding a 9.800 on the bars taking home top spot in the event. The senior also tallied a 9.750 on the vault to tie for first place with junior Erin Grigg.

 

Co-Gymnast of the Week

Kristin Teubner, Central Michigan, Fr., Denver, Colo. (Grandview HS)

Teubner led CMU to a victory at Ball State as the Chippewas remained undefeated this season. The true freshman took first on floor with a 9.800 and finished second on vault (9.825), both season highs.

 

Andrea Perini, Western Michigan, Sr., Sterling Heights, Mich./Sterling Heights

Perini, who was sidelined last Saturday after an injury on her vault landing, recovered this week and came back to capture the all-around crown with a season-high 38.425 against UIC. All of her scores were counted towards the team total, helping Western Michigan to its first win of the season. The Broncos narrowly defeated the Flames 191.875 to 191.575. Perini also placed first on the balance beam, sticking a 9.725. She had scores of 9.625 on the vault, 9.650 on the bars and 9.625 on the floor.

 

 

Specialist of the Week Additional Nominees

Andrea Kinzer, Bowling Green, Fr., Broadview Heights, Ohio/Brecksville-Broadview Heights

Andrea Kinzer recorded her second collegiate event win tying for first place on floor exercise landing a 9.750, matching her career high set earlier this for her first ever collegiate event win at home against Ball State. In only four collegiate meets, Kinzer has recorded five top-three finishes between the floor and vault and at least one top-three finish in every meet.

 

Jessica Suder, Central Michigan, Jr., Cranberry Township, Pa. (Seneca Valley HS)

Suder took first on beam for the third-straight week with a 9.750 as the Chippewas remained undefeated with a victory at Ball State.

 

Carly Conroy, Kent State, Jr., North Jackson, Ohio/Jackson-Milton

At a quad meet with #22 Denver, Alaska-Anchorage, and Winona State (1/31), Conroy registered the top score for the Golden Flashes and tied for fourth on beam with a career-high score of 9.825. She currently ranks 12th on beam in the Mid-American Conference.

 

Cepeda Carter, Western Michigan, Fr. Ypsilanti, Mich. (Huron)

Freshman walk-on Cepeda Carter stepped up big for the Broncos, as Western Michigan captured its first win of the season with a 191.875 to 191.575 win over UIC. Carter was one of three Broncos to  score a top finish, scoring a career-high 9.750 on the balance beam.

 

Gymnast of the Week Additional Nominees

Kasey Fillmore, Bowling Green, Fr., Danielson, Connecticut/Killingly

Kasey Fillmore stepped up with three strong performances for the Falcons leading the Orange and Brown on bars with a career high 9.775 tying for a second place finish. Fillmore also posted a 9.675 for a fifth place finish on floor and a 9.550 and seventh place finish on beam.

 

Christine Abou-Mitri, Kent State, So., Broadview Heights, Ohio/Brecksville-Broadview Heights

In a quad meet with and #22 Denver, Alaska-Anchorage and Winona State (1/31), Abou-Mitri finished second in the all-around with a total of 38.800 points as the Golden Flashes finished second overall with a total of 193.600 points. She currently ranks fourth in the Mid-American Conference on bars (9.750) and in the all-around (RQS-38.758). Her all-around RQS also ranks 13th regionally.
