BSU's Alyssa Rio Named CVU.com National Player of the Week

Updated 11/2/2010
The Collegiate Volleyball Update (CVU.com) is pleased to announce that Ball State senior Alyssa Rio has been selected as the CVU.com National Player of the Week for Oct. 25 through Oct. 31.

A 5-10 libero from Wayne, Ill., Rio was the defensive cornerstone as Ball State came up with a pair of key Mid-American Conference victories last week.

Starting the weekend off in a big way, Rio came up with a career-high 44 digs in helping the Cardinals come from behind to defeat Western Michigan. The senior had nine digs alone in the decisive fifth set. She also added four assists and an ace for the match and was perfect on 16 service receptions.

The next night playing for first place against Northern Illinois, Rio scooped up another 19 digs as Ball State earned the sweep. The libero again added four assists and an ace and was perfect on the serve receive.

For the week, Rio lifted 63 digs over eight sets, averaging 7.88 digs per set. She's currently fourth in the NCAA rankings, averaging 5.78 digs per set. With the wins, Ball State moves alone into first place in the MAC.

This is the third time a Ball State libero has been awarded the CVU.com National Player of the Week as Amanda McCormick was recognized in both 2005 and 2006.

In addition to the Player of the Week, CVU.com will be announcing selections for the Top Performers from the past week. These selections will include the Player of the Week and up to 10 others. Choices will consist of players who were finalists for the weekly honor and others who had exceptional individual matches. The additional selections will be based on nominations and CVU.com staff criteria.
