TOLEDO, OH ? Toledo junior Tammy Clelland shot a two-under par 70 in a qualifier today at Sylvania Country Club to earn a spot in this week’s LPGA Jamie Farr Owens Corning Classic. The tournament will be held on July 13-16 at Highland Meadows Golf Club in Sylvania. Clelland was one of two individuals out of 13 golfers to land a berth in the field. Senior Kim Kester also participated but did not qualify after shooting an 80.
“I played very well in all areas today and it’s probably the best I’ve ever played,” Clelland said. “I drove the ball straight, putted well and just played with a lot of confidence. I hadn’t been playing that well for the last week or so, but today everything just came together for me. I’m very excited, because this is the biggest tournament I have ever had a chance to play in.”
“This is certainly a very exciting day for Tammy and our program,” Toledo Head Coach Nicole Hollingsworth said. “She performed great in all areas and that’s one of the best rounds I’ve seen her play. She played with tremendous poise and showed a lot of composure against LPGA professionals.”
Clelland helped Toledo produce its best season ever in 2005-06 highlighted by a program-best second-place finish at the MAC Championships. Clelland earned first-team All-MAC honors and set a school record with a 75.6 stroke average, while Kester received second-team All-MAC laurels and produced the second-best stroke average in school history with a 76.5 mark.
