Mid-American Conference announces Tennis Players of the Week

Northern Illinois and Marshall Student-Athletes are Mid-American Conference Players of the Week

Marshall's Ashley Kroh and Northern Illinois' Juan Pablo Barriga represented their respective institutions as this weeks honorees as tennis players of the week. The league office will select a player of the week every week throughout the 2003 season.`

MAC Tennis Players of the Week
Women's Ashley Kroh, Marshall (So., Louisville, Ky.) won her #2 doubles match and #5 singles match to help Marshall end a five-game losing streak against nationally ranked opponents as they defeated #66 Middle Tennessee State, 4-3. Her victory in singles gave Marshall the deciding point in the match. In addition, her victory in doubles gave Marshall the doubles point.

Men's Juan Pablo Barriga, Northern Illinois (Jr., Ario de Rosales de Michoacan, Mexico) went 4-0 over the weekend, sweeping singles and doubles action against Illinois State and Bradley. He entered the week at 2-5 in singles play, but his win in a third-set tiebreaker helped NIU past the Redbirds 5-2. Barriga joined forces with Erick Martinez for two victories at the second doubles flight, lifting that tandem's season mark to 14-5.

Other Women's Nominations

Melissa Roach, Ball State (Jr., Hull, England) tallied a 2-0 record at No.1 singles plus combined for a 1-1 mark at the No. 2 doubles position ats Ball State posted a 5-2 victory over Illinois-Chicago and then fell 5-2 to 47th ranked Indiana. Roach coasted to a 6-4, 6-0 win over Nicole Derouin of UIC plus combined for a 8-4 win over the Flames' No. 2 doubles team. Roach beat the 47th ranked Hoosiers' No. 1 singles player with a 7-5, 6-2 count.

Cameron Benjamin, Bowling Green (So., Hull, Indianapolis, Ind) won at both singles and doubles in BGSU's narrow loss to Cincinnati. She captured a straight set decision over UC's Samantha Liu at the fifth singles flight. She teamed with Jessica Johnsonfor an 8-6 win at the third doubles flight.

Nancy Wiegand, Miami (So., Hamilton, Ohio) rallied from a one set-to-none deficit and stole a three-set battle from Michigan State's Shelly Brady.

Cassie Drake, Northern Illinois (So., Stillwell, Kan.) enjoyed a perfect day in NIU's 7-0 victory over Western Illinois, winning doubles and singles action without dropping a single game.

Rattiya Hiranrat, Western Michigan (Fr., Samutprakara, Thailand) earned WMU's only win at Purdue, with her 7-6 (4), 2-6, 6-2 win at the sixth position.

Other Men's Nominations Matt Baccarani, Ball State (Fr., Toronto, Ont.) was perfect in two singles matches and one doublesmatch as BSU swept IUPUI and IPFWby identical 7-0 scores. He surrendered just three games in the two matches.

Nick Zieziula, Buffalo (So., Hamburg, N.Y.) went 3-0 in doubles and 1-0 in singles in UB's four matches. He rallied from two match points to beat Villanova at the number four spot. With his doubles partner, he won a three-set march over Cornell.

Jose Orozco, Western Michigan (Fr., Cali, Colombia) posted a 4-0 record in two matches. He had a singles and doubles at both 46th ranked Purdue and Butler. He earned his 20th singles win of the season and has one less in doubles action.
