Akron's Tracee McCoy and Ohio's Heather Hagen Honored as MAC Pepsi Players of the Week

Cleveland, Ohio (May 9) - Akron's Tracee McCoy was named the Mid-American Conference Pepsi Hitter of the Week and Ohio's Heather Hagen was named the Mid-American Conference Pepsi Pitcher of the Week for the week of May 9.

Akron's Tracee McCoy is this week's MAC Softball Pepsi Player of the Week. In six games last week, the freshman second baseman hit .526 with five runs scored and six RBI. She had four multiple-hit games and drove in all three runs in a 3-2 eight-inning victory over Central Michigan. McCoy hit a two-run home run to send the game into extra innings and then hit a solo shot to win the game. She drove in at least one run against three different Akron opponents last week as the Zips went 5-1.

Ohio's Heather Hagen is this week's MAC Softball Pepsi Pitcher of the Week after going 3-1 last week. Hagen came up with two big wins over #13 Michigan in Ann Arbor, giving up just three hits to the Wolverines. She also struck out 20 batters in only 21.0 innings of action last week.

MAC TEAM NOTES

Akron Zips (12-8, 29-19) - For the second year in a row the Zips won nine of ten MAC games to finish the season and capture the third and final spot in the MAC East Division playoff race. The Zips only blemish coming down the home stretch was a 5-2 setback at home to Central Michigan. That setback snapped the Zips 8-game in conference winning streak and 10-game overall streak ... Freshman Tracee McCoy made a strong showing over the weekend in hopes of claiming the MAC Freshman of the Year award. In the Zips' 3-2 over Central Michigan on Saturday, McCoy almost single-handedly won the game. With CMU leading 2-0 in the bottom of the sixth, McCoy hit a two-run home run to tie the game and send it into extra innings. Then in the bottom of the eighth, McCoy led off with a home run to win the game ... Sophomore Lisa Keenan is on fire on the pitching rubber. After she dropped a 5-4 decision to Kent on April 18, she has won seven straight games to move to 15-11 on the season ... The Zips will take on Marshall in the first round of the MAC tournament. The Thundering Herd took two of three games from the Zips this season. Akron's only win came in a 13-inning marathon, 5-4, in the teams' final meeting.

Ball State Cardinals (9-11, 20-28) - Ball State will be making its fourth appearance in the MAC Tournament and its first since 1998 when the Cardinals captured the program's first-ever MAC title . . . The 2000 tournament field includes five of the same teams as in 1998 and, like 1998, BSU is a lower-seeded team . . . Marcy Mobley has totalled 191 strikeouts this season, six less than the school record set by 1998 MAC Player of the Year Bernie Coffman in 1989 . . . Mobley has struck out 191 batters in 193 innings of work . . . She has walked just 59 batters out of a total of 703 faced and scattered 159 hits . . . She has been even more dominant against league batters, striking out 96 in 88.2 innings of work . . . She has scattered just 67 hits and walked 19 of the 314 MAC batters she has faced . . . Nine of Mobley's losses this season have been one-run decisions, including five of six MAC losses . . . In just two seasons, she has totalled 335 strikeouts which places her No. 4 on BSU all-time charts ... BSU's most productive offensive innings have been the third and seventh, when the Cardinals have posted a 49-17 advantage in scoring . . . Katie Shea continues to top the Cardinals offensively with 50 hits, 22 runs and a .309 batting average . . . She has logged a team-leading 14 multiple-hit games, including five with four or more hits . . . BSU's .967 fielding percentage thus far is the best in school history . . . Led by Marcy Mobley's 191 strikeouts, Ball State pitchers have totalled 260 strikeouts - the third-highest total in school history.

Bowling Green Falcons (13-7, 28-16) - The Falcons won just one of three games at Ohio over the weekend, but that was enough to give Bowling Green a tie for the MAC East Division title ... The league crown is the first for the Brown and Orange since 1993 ... The Falcons deadlocked with Marshall, but won the tiebreaker by virtue of capturing two of the three head-to-head meetings with the Thundering Herd ... Bowling Green is the second seed for the tournament, and will open against the winner of the Ball State/Central Michigan game Thursday ... Junior LF Jen Domschot hit a two-run homer in the 8-6 win at Ohio Saturday, in the process tying the Bowling Green single-season record for round-trippers with five ... Bowling Green pounded out a season-high 16 hits in that win ... the Falcons lost a series against an East Division foe for the first time this year ... BGSU went 3-0 against Kent, 2-1 vs. Akron and Marshall, and 3-1 vs. Miami before going 1-2 in Athens ... Against the MAC Tournament field, the Falcons posted a record of 4-4 ... In addition to the aforementioned results vs. Akron and Marshall, the Brown and Orange went 0-2 vs. Northern Illinois ... BGSU did not play either of the team's possible opening opponents ... The Falcons' scheduled twinbill at Ball State was cancelled due to inclement weather, and BGSU was not scheduled to face Central Michigan this year.

Central Michigan Chippewas (15-5, 25-11) - The Chippewas begin defense of their MAC tournament title in similar fashion as last year as the No. 3 seed ... Another similarity from last season for CMU heading into the MAC tournament is that the Chippewas lost their last regular season MAC game in extra innings last year. CMU fell to Akron 3-2 in eight innings on Saturday ... CMU leads the MAC all-time with six tournament titles (1999, '97, '86, '85, '83, and '82) ... Central doubled its season home run total last weekend with three in the four-game weekend. Kim Burke and Hope Robertshaw each hit blasts in the same inning against Kent and then Nicole Weston bombed the 14th of her career in the opening game at Akron ... Weston's 14 career round-trippers ranks second in CMU history behind Eli Barnes and Cathy Wylie who each have 16 ... Jen Skuta has continued her hot hitting late in the season. She batted .357 last week with two doubles to bring her MAC average to .424 ... Central's team ERA in MAC action is an even 1.00 while its opponents mark is 2.85 ... Kent shut out Central Michigan 2-0 in its opening game last weekend marking the first time this season CMU was shutout by a non-nationally ranked team. Arizona State and Michigan are the only two other teams to blank CMU this season.

Marshall Thundering Herd (13-7, 25-25) - The Thundering Herd is making its first-ever appearance in the MAC tournament as the number four seed ... After finishing in a tie for fifth last season in the East Division, Marshall came back to claim a share of the East Division title this season with Bowling Green ... Sara Gulla broke the single-season record for strikeouts in one season with 209, which also leads the conferece. Gulla also broke the Marshall ERA record, finishing the regular season with an ERA of 1.02.

Miami RedHawks (5-15, 16-30) - Nicki Pelfrey had a 10-game hitting streak come to an end in Miami's second game of a three-game series at Marshall Keri Brisnehan posted her 15th multiple-hit game of the season in Miami's 1-0 loss to Marshall she was the only RedHawk to collect two hits in a game all weekend Miami's pitching staff came up only five strikeouts short of breaking the record of 283 it established last season Amber Arnold ended the season with 244 strikeouts, nine shy of her sister Abbey's 1999 single-season record of 153. Amber ranks second on the single-season chart.

Northern Illinois Huskies (19-3, 32-20) - Northern Illinois won its second-consecutive regular season title by sweeping Ball State in a three-game series ... The Huskies finished the regular season at 19-3 in MAC play ... Jill Carpenter broke the school record with her 58th career stolen base, by stealing home in a 1-0 victory over the Cardinals on Friday ... She is now 13-13 on stolen base attempts this season ... Courtney Witvliet threw two shutouts this past week ... Friday's victory over Ball State included two Northern Illinois milestones: Donna Martin won her 200th career game and the team won its 30th game of the season ... Martin is now 202-125-1 in her six-year tenure, while the Huskies reached the 30-win plateau for the sixth consecutive year and ninth time in the last ten seasons ... Sara Youstra took over the team batting lead with a .333 average, while Witvliet lowered her season ERA to below 1.00 (0.98) after this weekend's games.

Ohio Bobcats (10-11, 18-26) - The Bobcats posted two of the most impressive wins in school history with a doubleheader sweep at #13 Michigan on Wednesday ... Sophomore Heather Hagen earned both victories on the mound, as the reliever in game one before tossing a complete-game three hitter with eight strikeouts in game two ... Jennifer Schmidt scored the game-winning run in the eighth inning of game one on a single by Tiffany Bolton ... Lindsay Eirich's single in the sixth with a Wolverine error scored Bolton and Sara Kraus to put Ohio ahead for good. Ohio won two of three in the series against East Division leader Bowling Green ... Hagen pitched the complete-game two-hitter on Friday as Ohio used four hits and a Falcon error to post a three-run third inning ... Kasey Dowd earned the win on Saturday when Eirich was 3-of-3 at the plate with a single, a triple and a home run, scoring three times ... Kelli Bankert posted the game-winning hit with a solo home run. Bankert added her 15th double of the season against Bowling Green ... She continues to lead the MAC and rank among national leaders in doubles per game ... She has only struckout 11 times in 126 at bats this season ... She has been walked just five times, three in the series with Michigan.

Toledo Rockets (5-15, 11-26) - Toledo's season concluded with a 11-26 overall record and a 5-15 MAC record. Freshman centerfielder Jenny Schaaf concluded the season leading the Rockets in six categories -- hits (31), runs (16), home runs (4), total bases (48) slugging percentage (.495), and on-base percentage (.396) -- and tied for first in RBI (14) and stolen bases (4). Junior catcher Laurie Nagel paced the Rockets in batting average in MAC play with a .300 mark and finished second in overall games at .286.

Western Michigan (7-13, 14-31) - Head coach Kim Worden announced her resignation Friday afternoon, effective June 30, putting an end to her 13-year career at WMU Worden compiled a career record of 321-354 and was selected the MAC Coach of the Year in 1997 the Broncos collected their first league series sweep of the season with three-straight wins over Toledo the three-game winning streak is also the team's longest of the season WMU completed the campaign by winning five of their last six contests the Broncos graduate only two seniors and will return seven starters and theentire pitching staff in 2001.


MAC Notes and Milestones

*Northern Illinois will host the MAC tournament for the second-straight year after repeating as the Mid-American Conference regular-season champions. Last season, Central Michigan won four straight games in the double-elimination tournament to advance to the NCAA tournamentl. Central Michigan's Tina Kinney was named the unanimous tournament MVP last season after recording all four shutouts, including one no-hitter.

*Margo Jonker earned her 700th career win earlier this season with a 1-0 victory over Baylor.

*Northern Illinois' Donna Martin earned her 200th career victory this past weekend against Ball State. Martin's overall record now stands at 202-125-1

*Three MAC coaches have reached the 100-win mark with their respective teams this season. Akron's Deanna Parks won her 100th game as the Zips Head Coach when Akron defeated Morehead State on Tuesday, March 21; Ball State's Teri Laux won her 100th game at the helm of the Cardinals against Toledo on Tuesday, April 18; Kent's Karen Linder won her 100th game as Kent's head coach against Akron on Tuesday, April 18. Ohio's Roanna Brazier is six wins away from the century mark.
