WESTERVILLE, OHIO (May 3) - Kent State's Ben Curtis (Sr., Ostrander, Ohio) shot
an opening-round of 66 to take the early lead at the 2000 Mid-American
Conference Men's Golf Championship at The Medallion in Westerville,
Ohio. Defending champion Danny Sahl (Jr., Edmonton, Alberta), of KSU,
is tied for fifth place (69) to help Curtis lead the Golden Flashes to a
share in the team lead.
KSU and Marshall share the team lead at 282, followed by Miami in third
place (285) and Toledo in fourth place (285). Northern Illinois and
Ohio are tied for fifth place (292), while Bowling Green sits in seventh
place (293), Eastern Michigan in eighth place (294), Ball State in ninth
place (297) and Akron in 10th place (313).
A.J. Riley (Sr., Russell, Ky.) leads the Thundering Herd with a round of
68 to place fourth for the day. Miami's Lee Curry (Jr., Nepean,
Ontario) and Ohio's Erik Herberth (Jr., Avon Lake, Ohio) are tied for
second place after shooting season-low rounds of 69. Toledo's Tim Rice
(Sr., Limerick, Ireland), the 1997 MAC Tournament Champion, shot 69 to
tie for fifth place with Sahl.
The Golden Flashes are looking for a fourth consecutive MAC Championship
and 12th overall, while the Thundering Herd is aiming for the school's
first MAC Golf Championship since 1966. Marshall owns two MAC Golf
titles, earned in 1962 and 1966, prior to leaving the conference in
1969. The Herd rejoined the league in 1997.
The tournament continues at 7:30 am on Friday at The Medallion Golf
Course in Westerville, Ohio. The 10-team contingent will play two
rounds on Friday and a final round on Saturday for a 72-hole event.
