MAC Saturday Recaps Games of Feb. 12, 2000

The Toledo Rockets, the hottest team in the MAC, won their sixth consecutive game Saturday, beating Eastern Michigan 67-69 to close within a half-game game of West Division leader Ball State, who was idle. The other West contender, Northern Illinois, suffered a 68-64 loss at Marshall to fall a full game back of the Cardinals.

In the East, the top three teams won as Kent, Akron and Bowling Green all survived challenges, respectively, from Buffalo, Ohio and Miami.

Toledo 67, at Eastern Michigan 59 - The Rockets won their sixth straight and are within a half game of first place Ball State. Justin Hall paced Toledo with 15 points and 7 rebounds while Greg Stempin contributed 15 points and 7 rebounds. Calvin Warner led the Eagles with 16 points and 11 rebounds. EMU dropped its third consecutive game, mostly in part to a 31.1% accuracy rate from the floor (19-of-61).

Kent 81, Buffalo 65 - Kent broke away from a close game at the half to secure a win over Buffalo and maintian a one game advantage in its East Division lead. Up 37-34 at halftime, the Golden Flashes won their 20th game of the season with a 44-31 second half margin. Center John Whorton pumped in a game-high 18 points while Andrew Mitchell and Trevor Huffman added 14 and Mike Perry 12 for the victors. Mike McKie led the Bulls with 15 points and added three blocked shots. UB also received 13 points from Louis Campbell and 11 each from Damien Foster and Kerry Hendrickson.

At Akron 81, Ohio 79, overtime - Ryan Andrick scored 25 points as the Zips outlasted a tough Bobcat squad to maintain its second place status in the East, just one game behind Kent and a half game in front of Bowling Green. The game was the 17th this season involving overtime for a MAC team. The Zips received 13 points from Jimmal Ball, 12 by Jami Bosley and 11 from George Phillips. Ohio's Shaun Stonerook recorded his national leading 18th double-double with 25 points and 15 rebounds. The Bobcats also got strong performances from Sanjay Adell (19 points, 8 rebounds) and Brandon Hunter (18 and 8).

At Marshall 68, Northern Illinois 64 - In a must win for both teams, the Thundering Herd built a 12-point lead and then hung on for the win. The MAC's leading scorer, Tamar Slay, scored 17 of his 20 points in the second half for the Herd. J.R. Van Hoose added 11 and Derrick Wright blocked 4 shots for Marshall. The Huskies were paced by sophomore Leon Rodgers, who scored a game-high 20 points and grabbed 8 rebounds. T.J. Lux posted a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds.

Bowling Green 66, at Miami 60 - The Falcons won in Oxford for the first time in 12 years behind 19 points from Anthony Stacey. BG, who broke out to a 13-0 lead at the start of the game, got 12 points from Len Matela and 10 out of Dave Esterkamp. Brandon Pardon dished out 9 assists. For the RedHawks, who battled back to a 47-47 second half tie, Mike Ensminger tallied a career-high 16 points. Anthony Taylor had 15 for Miami, Refiloe Lethunya 12 points and 13 rebounds and Rob Mestas 10 points and 4 assists.

At Western Michigan 76, Central Michigan 75 - The Broncos snapped a four-game losing streak while the Chippewas suffered their fourth consecutive loss. WMU's Tony Barksdale led all scorers with 26 points, offsetting a 24-point outing by CMU's David Webber. Thadus Williams and Rod Brown scored 18 each and Brown added 6 assists for Western. CMU received 16 points and 6 assists from Tim Kisner, 15 points from Chad Pleiness and 11 from Willie Wallace.
