MAC GYMNAST OF THE WEEK

Sara Wasilenko, Eastern Michigan
Senior - Rome, New York

Wasilenko tied for first on the floor with a 9.900 and also finished fourth on the beam with a score of 9.775. Rounding out her appearances was a 10th place performance on vault. Wasilenko had been a major part of the Eagles late season winning streak with her strong performances on floor.

OTHER STANDOUT PERFORMANCES

Bethany Couturier, Central Michigan
Senior - Grand Rapids, Michigan

Couturier posted her third mark of 9.900 or higher on the beam this season, with a 9.900 on the apparatus against West Virginia. Her 9.900 against WVU tied her for the top spot. She also scored a 9.650 on the vault and a 9.575 on the bars, to finish seventh and 11th, respectively.

April Zentko, Kent State
Freshman - Poland, Ohio

Zentko place second on the beam with a 9.850 and third on the floor (9.825) during the Golden Flashes victories over Ohio State and Pittsburgh. Zentko is currently seventh in the region on beam, averaging a 9.747.

Kristin Maul, Western Michigan
Senior - Clinton Township, Michigan

Maul matched the school record on the balance beam with a 9.900 at the William and Mary Invitational, helping Western Michigan to a school record total on the event (49.050) and a season-best team mark of 194.500. Maul also posted a 9.700 on the uneven bars. At the Progress Energy Classic, Maul posted a pair of 9.775 scores on the bars and beam. Her bars effort was the top mark on the squad and her beam score was second on team honors.

TEAM NOTES

Ball State: The Cardinals turned in a fourth place finish at the Progress Energy Invitational hosted by North Carolina. The host team won the event with 195.525, followed by Western Michigan (194.250), Yale (193.775) and Ball State (192.450). BSU competed in the event without the services of senior Renee Planck. Jenny Gantt won the floor event for the fifth time this season, garnering a 9.875. Amy Bodus finished fourth on the vault, while Jamie Swisher and Jessica Surridge tied for fifth.

Bowling Green: The Falcons claimed the Mid-American Conference regular season title in a history making victory over Eastern Michigan (195.975-195.250). By defeating the Eagles, Bowling Green tied the 1978-79 squad for the winningest record in school history. BGSU went a perfect 6-0 in MAC dual meets and now stands at 16-1 on the season. Senior Marny Oestreng won the all-around event with a MAC-season high mark of 39.400, earning second place honors on the vault and beam, while tying for first on the floor with teammate Pia Sjovall. Senior Falcon Mindy Untch won the bars, after garnering a career-high mark of 9.875. Junior Kathy Emerson also tied a career high mark on the vault, with a 9.800.

Central Michigan: Central Michigan narrowly fell to West Virginia on Saturday night by a close margin of 194.550-194.475. Bethany Couturier and Shanna Duggan tied for first on the beam with a 9.900. The feat was a season-high for Duggan, who also tied for second on the floor with a 9.875. Kara Reighard placed second in the all-around with a 39.150. Couturier's 9.900 on the beam marks the third time this season that she has earned a 9.900 or higher. She hit a 9.900 against Northern Illinois (Jan. 27) and scored a school-record 9.950 at the Wolfpack Invitational (Mar. 2).

Eastern Michigan: EMU closed out the regular season with a loss to Bowling Green, 195.975-195.250. The loss snapped the Eagles eight meet winning streak. Natalie Hashimoto won the vault event with a score of 9.950 and finished second in the all-around with a mark of 39.375. Jennie Spindler won the beam with a 9.950, while Sara Wasilenko finished third, posting a 9.900. The Eagles claimed the top marks on the vault and beam, earning team scores of 49.025 and 48.850, respectively. Hashimoto led a trio of Eagles to finish within the top four places on vault. Leah Hashimoto finished tied for second (9.850) and Laura Holensworth claimed fourth (9.825).

Kent State: The Golden Flashes avenged their close, early-season loss to Ohio State by defeating the Buckeyes in Columbus, by a mark of 194.325-193.200. KSU also finished ahead of Pittsburgh, who posted a 194.050 to finish in second. Senior Heather Langham finished second on the floor exercise for only the second time this season. Langham had posted first-place marks on the floor in seven of the team's nine meets this season. Kent State notched the highest vault and bars scores of the meet with a 48.775 and 48.400 respectively. Junior Katie Pokrana and sophomore Jessie James led the way on vault, both tying for second with a 9.825. On beam, freshman April Zentko finished second with a score of 9.850.

Northern Illinois: NIU posted its best team score of the season (193.250) in a loss to Illinois-Chicago (194.975). The score, which included a 48.400 on vault and a 48.450 on floor, now stands as the sixth best score in program history. Kristina Campos won the bars event with a 9.875 and captured second place honors on the vault with a 9.750, en route to a second-place finish in the all-around (39.025). NIU senior Rosa Marafioti finished right behind Campos in the all-around with a 38.850 in her final gymnastics meet at Evans Field House.

Western Michigan: The Broncos posted a season-best mark of 194.500 in the opener of the team's spring road trip to tie for first-place with William and Mary. WMU claimed a program-high score of 49.050 on the balance beam, led by Kristin Maul, who matched the school standard of 9.900. For the first time this season, the Broncos surpassed the 48-point barrier in every event to set the third best team total in the WMU books. The team continued a strong spring trip by placing second out of four teams at the Progress Energy Invitational and posting the second highest total of the season. Western Michigan earned a school record in the floor, scoring 49.275 to win the event. The Broncos had five of their six event competitors finish with at least a 9.825. Sara Trudeau, Juile Haines-LaPenta, and Laura Ransing each earned 9.875 to lead the way.

Mid-American Conference: The Mid-American Conference Gymnastics Gymnastics Championships are less than two weeks away. The event will be held at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana on March 23. Four of the six teams set new season standards over the weekend - Eastern Michigan (195.250), Bowling Green (195.775), Western Michigan (194.500) and Northern Illinois (193.250) each set a new season-high.
