DAYTON, Ohio (AP) - Tamar Slay scored 19 points and Marshall held off a late-game surge by No. 24 Dayton to edge the Flyers 67-65 on Saturday.

Dayton's Yuanta Holland hit a jumper with about 5 seconds left to bring Dayton to within two, but Marshall was able to run out the clock to win.

Marshall took control of the game with about 11 minutes left by penetrating Dayton's defense and pounding the ball inside. J.R. VanHoose had 15, and Latece Williams added 11 for the Thundering Herd (3-1).

Holland had 20 points for Dayton (2-3), but the Flyers shot only 38 percent from the floor in the second half. Tony Stanley, who had been averaging 19.3 points for Dayton, was held to seven points and was 0-for-7 in the first half.

The Flyers committed 16 turnovers and were only 3-for-16 from the 3-point line in the second half.

Slay, Marshall's 6-foot-9 guard, was held below his 23.7-points-a-game average. But he was effective, scoring both from the perimeter and inside.

Marshall went into a full-court press at the game's start, hoping for a repeat of Dayton's turnover-plagued 82-75 loss to Cincinnati on Wednesday. The teams exchanged leads nine times in the first half, with Dayton on top at halftime 33-32.

But Marshall came out strong in the second half and built a nine-point lead with 3:50 remaining.

Down by 63-56 with 2:53 left, Nate Green hit two free throws to draw Dayton to within five. Marshall missed a 3-point attempt, Dayton rebounded, and Ramod Marshall scored on a drive to the hoop to cut the Marshall lead to three with 1:19 left.

But the Flyers couldn't overcome Marshall, losing their second straight.

Bowling Green Tops Duquesne, 92-77

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (AP) _ Len Matela scored 25 points and grabbed a career-high 17 rebounds as Bowling Green won its 18th straight home game Saturday, beating Duquesne 92-77.

Matela was 9-of-14 from the field and made all seven of his foul shots to lead five Falcons (2-1) in double figures.

The Falcons took the lead for good with 5:18 to go in the first half when Keith McLeod broke a 23-23 tie with a layup to start a 14-6 run that gave the Falcons a 36-29 halftime lead. The Falcons had a lead of as much as 23 points in the second half.

The Falcons hit 63 percent of their shots in the second half, 20-of-32, and shot 53 percent for the game, 34-of-64. The Dukes (3-4) shot 52 percent for the game, 26-of-60.

Matela's 17 rebounds gave Bowling Green a 37-25 edge on the boards. Both teams had 16 turnovers.

Wayne Smith led Duquesne (3-4) with 22 points. Courtney Wallace scored 13 points and had a team-high eight rebounds.

Kevin Netter scored 17 points for the Falcons. Trent Jackson added 15, McLeod scored 11 and Brandon Pardon had 10 for Bowling Green. Pardon also had 12 assists.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) - Jeremy Logan scored 19 points and Rob Thomson added 18 and grabbed nine rebounds as Fairfield beat Akron, 71-53, Saturday (Dec. 2) in the consolation game of the Carrier Classic.

Fairfield (1-3), which lost 65-61 to Virginia Tech in the first round, used a 20-7 spurt at the start of the second half to break open what had been a close game against the Zips (1-2), who were beaten 81-51 by No. 20 Syracuse in the first round.

Emmanuel Smith led Akron with 10 points, while Andy Hipsher and Nate Schindewolf each had nine.

Trailing 27-26, Sam Spann, who played one season for Syracuse before transferring two years ago to Fairfield, got the Stags moving with three straight baskets. He finished with 10 points.

A three-point play by Logan gave Fairfield a 39-30 lead with 14:31 remaining and a 3-pointer from the right corner by Chris Rivers ended the run and gave the Stags a double-digit lead, 46-34, with 11:04 to go.

The Zips, who were 2-for-10 from 3-point range and shot just 38.6 percent for the game, were unable to mount a comeback.

A free throw by Byron Thompson pulled Akron within 48-41 with 8:44 remaining, but the Stags responded with a 9-1 run to secure their first victory of the season.

Hipsher had five points in the first four minutes of the game as Akron rushed to an 11-4 lead. But Thomson scored six straight points at the foul line to tie the game at 24 with 2:33 left in the first half.

A 3-pointer by Schindewolf off a steal by Hipsher broke the tie in the final minute, but Rivers hit a jumper with 33 seconds to play to cut the Zips' lead to 27-26 at the half.

The Stags hit 51 percent of their shots for the game.

Miami Knocks Off UW-Green Bay, 56-42

OXFORD, Ohio (AP) - Doug Davis scored 16 points and Jason Grunkemeyer added nine points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead Miami to a 56-42 victory over Wisconsin-Green Bay on Saturday (Dec. 2).

Miami (3-3) took the lead at the 16:37 mark in the first half and never lost it, ending the first half with a 27-15 lead over Wisconsin-Green Bay (3-3).

The RedHawks were helped in the first half by a 12-0 run that began with a score of 12-10 at the 9:26 mark and ended with a free throw by Paul Kraft at the 2:25 mark that cut Miami's lead to 24-11.

Miami continued to dominate the second half, never allowing Wisconsin-Green Bay to get any closer than eight points and leading by as much as 17 points with only 3:20 remaining in the game.

Mike King led scoring for Wisconsin-Green Bay with 16 points, and Kraft added seven points and led his team in rebounds with seven.

Miami made 82 percent of its free throws, while Wisconsin-Green Bay made only 47 percent.

Both teams struggled with perimeter shooting. The RedHawks were just 2-of-13 from 3-point range, while the Phoenix was 1-of-13.

Kent Defeats Centenary, 61-47

MILWAUKEE, Wisc. (AP) - Andrew Mitchell scored 14 points, all in the second half, to lead Kent State to a 61-47 victory over Centenary for third place of the Blue and Gold Coca-Cola Classic on Saturday night.

The Flashes (3-2) built a 32-19 lead at halftime but were unable to put the game away until the final minutes.

Kyrem Massey added 10 points for Kent State, which shot 38 percent, 18-of-48, from the field.

Centenary (2-4) was led by Ronnie McCollum with 17 points and Shohn Williams with 10. The Gents also shot 38 percent, 19-of-50.

Early in the second half, Centenary twice pulled within six, only to have Mitchell hit 3-pointers each time. The Gents closed to 45-37, but then Kent State put the game away.

Mitchell scored the next six points and the Flashes scored their final eight points on free throws, four by Trevor Huffman and two each by Mitchell and Matt Smriga.

Toledo Stops George Mason, 84-70

TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) - Nick Moore hit 7-of-8 shots, including all six of his 3-points attempts, to lead Toledo to an 84-75 victory over George Mason on Saturday night.

Moore and Greg Stempin scored 20 points apiece and Terry Reynolds added 19 as the Rockets (5-0) made 68 percent of their 3-point attempts, 13-of-19. Reynolds made 4-of-5 3-point attempts and Stempin was 2-of-5.

Overall, the Rockets shot 58 percent from the field, 28-of-48, including 64 percent in the first half.

The Patriots (3-2) made 57 percent of their first half shots, including 5-of-7 3-points attempts, but still trailed by 10 points at the half, 49-39. For the game, George Mason hit 50 percent of its shots, 28-of-56.

George Evans led four Patriots in double figures, scoring 22 points while hitting 10-of-15 from the field. Erik Herring scored 21 points and Jon Larranaga and Tremaine Price had 10 points apiece for George Mason.

George Mason had 33 rebounds to 23 for Toledo, but had 19 turnovers to 14 for Toledo.

Robierre Cullars and Craig Rodgers scored 11 points apiece for Toledo.

Princeton Tops Ball State, 49-47

MUNCIE, Ind. (AP) - Nate Walton scored 15 points and Mike Bechtold added 14 as Princeton beat Ball State, 49-47, on Saturday in the First Merchants Classic.

Walton and Bechtold also were named to the all-tournament team, joining Ball State's Patrick Jackson, Weber State's Stephan Bachmann, and Anderson's Jim Scarbeary.

Weber State beat Anderson 81-73 in the tournament consolation game.

Tournament MVP Theron Smith led Ball State (2-3) with 15 points and 10 rebounds, including the game's final points on two free throws with 2:11 left.

Ball State led 20-18 at halftime and extended the lead to 28-20 in the first 3:05 of the second half.

But Princeton (2-2) went on a 9-0 run over the next 3:21 to take a 29-28 lead, capped by Ed Persia's lay-up. Persia finished with eight points.

Billy Lynch fouled Persia on the basket. But Persia missed the free throw, and Rob Robbins hit a 3-pointer and a free throw to put the Cardinals back up, 32-29.

Persia then answered with a 3-pointer to tie it at 13:13. Princeton extended the lead to five points twice in the next three minutes before the Cardinals went on a 9-0 run to build a 43-39 lead.

Princeton regained the lead for the win on a 10-4 run over the next 2:30, with Walton scoring seven of his 11 second-half points during the run.

Tennessee Tech Defeats Eastern Michigan, 86-70

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. (AP) _ Larrie Smith scored 25 points and grabbed 16 rebounds as Tennessee Tech beat Eastern Michigan 86-70 Saturday night.

Tennessee Tech (2-3) also got double-digit help from Leigh Gayden, who had 22 points and went 4-of-5 from three-point range. Joey Westmoreland added 13 points, while DeAntoine Beasley scored 12 more.

Eastern Michigan (0-4) trailed by only two at halftime, and returned after the break to tie the game at 52 with 12:55 to play. But Tech answered with an 18-6 scoring run that started with a 3-pointer by Joey Westmoreland.

Westmoreland's score gave Tech the lead for good at 12:40. It was capped by Beasley's 3-pointer almost five minutes later.

Cottrill led scoring for Eastern Michigan with 20 points. C.J. Grantham followed with 12, while Ryan Hopkins added 10.

Ohio Shoots Past Niagara, 77-64

HALIFAX, Nova Scotia (Dec. 2) (AP) - Ohio scored the first 15 points of the game and Brandon Hunter scored 13 of his 20 points in the second half as the Bobcats neat Niagara, 77-64, on Saturday (Dec. 2).

The Eagles didn't score their first point until 5:01 had been played and never got any closer than five points.

Dustin Ford added 16 points and Anthony Jones had 15 for Ohio (2-0). Hunter also had 13 rebounds.

Niagara closed the gap to 60-55 with 7:07 left in the second half, but Ohio scored 11 consecutive points to put the game away.

Niagara's Demond Stewart, seventh in the nation in scoring last year, was hampered by foul trouble and an injured ankle and only scored 11 points before fouling out. He made only one of seven free throws.

Stewart's backcourt mate, Daryl Greene, led Niagara (3-2) with 15 points. Michael Schmidt added 13.

Western Michigan Falls To Marist, 78-71

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. (AP) _ Drew Samuels had 22 points and nine rebounds to help Marist give coach Dave Magarity the 200th win of his career with a 78-71 decision over Western Michigan Saturday night.

Marist (2-3) led 48-29 at the half on 61.3 percent shooting.

The Broncos (0-5) made nearly half their second-half shots and outscored the Red Foxes by 12, but it wasn't enough to overcome their first-half deficit.

Sean Kennedy scored 12 points and dished out 11 assists for Marist.

Steve Reynolds scored 19 points, Reggie Berry added 12 and Jon Powell had 11 for Western.
