Kent State's Jill Kowalski Named MAC Gymnast of the Week and Bethany Kenel of Bowling Green Named MAC Specialist of the Weel

Gymnast of the Week

 

Jill Kowalski

Kent State

Jr. ● (Carol Stream, Ill. /Glenbard North)

 

Kowalski placed third in the all-around in their five team meet with a score of 38.775.  She also notched a 9.800 on floor which was a season-high tying effort.  She also put up strong performances on bars (9.725) and beam (9.700).

Kelly Watson

Sr. ● (Revenna, Mich. /Allendale)

 

Watson captured the all-around for the Cardinals with a score of 38.075.  Watson took fifth on vault with a score of 9.725 which was a season and career high for her; she scored a 9.400 on bars, collected a 9.325 on beam and scored a 9.625 in her floor routine.

 

Morgan Balzer

Bowling Green

Fr. ● (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington)

 

Balzer competed in her first all-around. She finished tied for sixth on vault (9.625) and also set a new career best. On beam she finished third also setting a new personal best with a 9.675. Finally on floor she tied for sixth again with a 9.575. 

 

Katie Simon

Central Michigan

Fr. ● (Bristol, Wis. /Westosha)

 

Simon scored 38.400 in the all-around to lead Central Michigan to a third-place finish at the State of Michigan Classic, topping a pair of conference rivals, Eastern Michigan and defending champion Western Michigan, with a team score of 193.425. She had a career-best 9.825 on the floor exercise to finish fourth overall on that event, and added strong scores of 9.775 on vault and 9.700 on uneven bars.

 

Duyen Zu Voung

Eastern Michigan

Voung tied her season high mark of 38.725 in the all-around on her way to taking 8th place at the Michigan Classic.  Her performance was the best among the Mid-American Conference schools in the Classic.

 

 

Leah Johnson

Northern Illinois

So. ● (Glenview, Ill. /Glenbrook South)

 

Johnson finished fifth in the all-around at the Iowa Quadrangular meet with a score of 37.825.  Johnson recorded her season-best scores of 9.725 and 9.475, on the bars and floor exercise respectively.  She also recorded an NIU team-leading 9.725 on the vault to finish fourth, while placing sixth on the bars and tied for seventh on the floor. 

 

Andrea Perini

Western Michigan

Andrea Perini was WMU’s top-finisher in the vault, bars, and all-around this week at the State of Michigan Classic. Perini placed ninth in the vault (9.775), 14th in the bars (9.700) and ninth in the all-around (38.400).

 

 

Specialist of the Week

Bethany Kenel

Bowling Green

Jr. ● (Saginaw, Mich. /Heritage)

 

Bethany Kenel landed a 9.850, a new personal best on the beam, this past weekend. This score not only placed her first, it also ties her for eighth all-time on beam scores, and places her first in MAC scores this season.

Tarkington took first place on vault after she scored a 9.850 which was a season and career high.

 

 

Sheena Smith

Central Michigan

Sr. ● (Middleburg, Fla. /Ridgeview)

 

Smith scored 9.800 on both of her events, vault and uneven bars, as Central Michigan beat both Eastern Michigan and defending MAC champion Western Michigan at the State of Michigan Classic. She was the top-scoring performer among the three MAC schools on both events. Smith finished tied for fourth overall on bars and tied for eighth overall on vault.

 

Jolene Worley

Eastern Michigan

Junior Jolene Worley posted a 9.800 on the floor at this week’s Michigan Classic, finishing in 9th place.  

 

Amy Cucinotta

Kent State

Sr. ● (Williamsville, N.Y./Amherst)

 

Cucinotta gave an outstanding performance on floor this weekend.  She put up a 9.825 which tied her season high mark.

 

Jennifer Naughton

Northern Illinois

So. ● (Smithville, Mo. /Smithville)

 

Naughton recorded NIU’s top placing at the Iowa Quadrangular Meet by tying for third on the balance beam with a 9.700.  Her score was the top score on the beam by any NIU gymnast this season.  Naughton added a 9.650, the second-highest score on the team, on the vault, to take sixth on that event.  She also earned a 9.375 on the floor exercise as all three of her scores counted for NIU in the meet.

 

Elizabeth Prouty

Western Michigan

Prouty recorded a personal-best 9.825 in the floor for the second week in a row, finishing as the top-scoring Bronco in fourth place at the State of Michigan Classic.
