Akron Chad Barson (soccer)
Chad Barson (So., 4.00, biology) helped lead the No. 1-ranked UA men's soccer team to a pair of shutout victories over Cal State Northridge and Cincinnati this the weekend as the Zips (5-0) captured the University of Akron Tournament title. Barson played all 180 minutes as UA extended its consecutive shutout streak to 10 games, dating back to the 2009 season, with a 3-0 decision over the Matadors and a 1-0 victory over the Bearcats. It is the third-longest consecutive shutout streak in NCAA history. Furthermore, Barson also made an impact in the Zips' attack with his first goal of the year - and second of his career - against Cal State Northridge. Barson owns a perfect 4.0 as a biology major at UA. For his efforts, Barson was named to Top Drawer Soccer's National Team of the Week Monday as well as The University of Akron All-Tournament Team.
The MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week honor is presented to a MAC male student-athlete who has a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and performs well during the week's competition. The winners are selected by a group of the conference's faculty athletic representatives.
