Seattle, Wash. - Kent State women's golfer Martina Gillen (Dublin, Ireland/Maryfield College) finished among the top 20 collegiate golfers in the nation at the 2002 NCAA Women's Golf Championships today (May 24) on the par-72, 6,273-yard Washington National Golf Club.
Gillen carded rounds of 74-74-70-73=291, tying for 13th overall at the tournament. Last season, she tied for 30th at the tournament with a final total of 300.
Individually Virada Nirapathpongporn from Duke University won first place with scores of 68-69-70-72=279. She finished nine-under for the entire tournament.
After leading for the first three rounds, the University of Arizona was knocked to second place by Duke University. The Blue Devils notched rounds of 294-293-290-287=1,164 to claim the 2002 NCAA Championship crown.
