MAC Men's Golfer of the Week
Mike Sabo - Miami
So. - St. Louis, Mo.
Sabo won his first-ever individual title at the Bradford Creek
Intercollegiate, shooting a season-low 68 in the first round and a 73 in
the second round to claim the title by one stroke. He ended the first
day in a first-place tie, but came out the second day and took sole
possession of first place -- the best finish of any Miami golfer this
season. Only two rounds were played due to poor weather conditions on
the first day.
Other Top Performances
John Smarrelli (BGSU, Fr., New Castle, Pa.) placed 13th at the Eastern
Kentucky Spring Intercollegiate. He shot a 224 with a low round of 73.
He tied for 12th place at the Silver Springs Shores Invitational on
March 11-12. He scored a low round of 71 and finished with a
three-round stroke total of 216.
Jeff Mankiewicz (EMU, So., White Lake, Mich.) came back in the final
round to shoot a round-low (and career-low) 69, helping EMU to a
fifth-place finish at the Kauai Collegiate. Mankiewicz opened the
tournament with back-to-back rounds of three-over par. He tied with
teammate Brent Goulding for eighth place individually.
Brent Goulding (EMU, Jr., Peterborough, Ontario) was the top MAC
finisher at the Silver Springs Invitational. He finished fourth with a
score of 211. His opening round 69 is a season best.
Lee Curry (Miami, Jr., Nepean, Ontario) rebounded from an opening day
75, stringing together consecutive rounds of 73 to lead Miami and finish
13th individually. He finished second overall at the Wolverine
Invitational in his first competition as a RedHawk on March 4-5.
Tim Rice (Toledo, Sr., Limerick, Ireland) tied for 12th place out of 93
golfers to help toledo tie for fifth place at the Dr. Pepper
Intercollegiate. Rice shot 214 in three rounds with a low round of 68.
Richard Elliott (Toledo, Sr., Port Rush, Ireland) led the squad at the
