Ohio's Wervey Named MAC Wrestler of the Week

Cleveland, Ohio-- (Jan. 18) Ohio University junior John Wervey has been honored as the Pepsi Mid-American Conference Wrestler of the Week for the week of Jan. 18.

A 165 lb. wrestler from Chagrin Falls, Ohio, Wervey went 2-0 on the week. His first win was a 3-1 decision over Buffalo's Gary Cooper, the league's #1 ranked wrestler at 165 lb. with a 19-4 record. Wervey also captured a 2-1 decision over Yanni Diamond of the 10th-ranked Edinboro team in a 19-18 Bobcat loss. Wervey improved his record to 9-6.

Other Nominees For This Week's Award: Buffalo's Jake Partlow (157, Sr., Kennonsburg, Ohio) went 2-1 over the weekend, including an overtime win against Clarion to set up the Bulls' 18-17 victory. He also won 10-4 over Ohio's Tom Seryak and lost to Edinboro's Ben Boyer, the nation's 13th ranked wrestler, to improve to 15-7.

Central Michigan's Ryan Cunningham (174, Sr., Middleton, Mich.) ranked fifth in the nation, beat the nation's seventh ranked wrestler, All-American Mike Feeney from Eastern Michigan, 4-1, and also pinned Michigan's Charles Martell in 5:34. Cunningham increased his record to 13-3.

Kent's Anthony Ralph (157, So., Walton Hills, Ohio) beat Cleveland State's Brandon Gibes, 4-1, to tie the match at 15-15 (the final score) after Kent had lost three of the previous four individual matches. Ralph upped his season record to 9-2.

Northern Illinois' Tom LeCuyer (141, Sr., Plano, Ill.) went 2-0 with an 18-2 technical fall versus Nick Scacco of Northwestern and a 5-4 decision against Grant Hoerr of Wisconsin. Both LeCuyer and Hoerr were ranked honorable mention last week by InterMat. LeCuyer improved to 13-6 overall (7-6 at 141 lb. and 6-1 at 149 lb.).
