CLEVELAND, OH (January 10, 2000) -- Kent's Brian Baughman (wrestling) and Buffalo's Tara
Perrier (women's basketball) were named the MAC Scholar Athletes of the
Week on January 10, 2000.
Baughman (wrestling, Sr., 3.12, marketing, Coshocton, Ohio) defeated
Eastern Michigan's Josh Wiles 17-7 in a major decision. He defeated No.
18 Chris Williams of Michigan State 11-7.
Perrier (women's basketball, Jr., 3.34, business, Aurora, Ohio) came off
the bench to score a career-high 26 points, including seven-of-nine
shooting from three-point range, to lead Buffalo to an 85-81 win at
Bowling Green. Buffalo extended its win streak to 12 games with the
victory. Perrier hit 9-of-14 shots and added seven rebounds as Buffalo
rebounded from a 20-point deficit and the loss of MAC-leading scorer
Tiffany Bell, who went out with an ankle sprain early in the second
half. For the week, Perrier was 8-of-12 from three-point range in a
pair of UB wins.
The honor is presented to a MAC male and female student-athlete who has
a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and performs well
during that week's competition. The winners are selected by one of the
conference's faculty athletic representatives.
Other Female Nominees:
Central Michigan: Nicole Liphardt (gymnastics, 3.23, physical
education, Ajax, Ontario) led CMU to wins over Northern Illinois, Winona
State and Wisconsin-Whitewater at the Huskie Quadrangular. Liphardt won
the all-around (38.975), floor exercise (9.825) and the bars (9.725).
Kent: Alana Bader (women's basketball, Sr., 3.29, human movement
studies, Kennan, Wis.) recorded a season-high nine rebounds in Kent's
87-69 win at Eastern Michigan. She also had a career/season-high seven
assists in the Golden Flashes' 86-60 victory over Akron. Bader averaged
12.0 points, 5.5 rebounds, 6.0 assists and 3.0 steals per game on the
week.
Toledo: Jennifer Markwood (women's basketball, Sr., 3.91, music
education, Perrysburg, Ohio) had 11 points and nine rebounds in a 67-66
overtime loss to Western Michigan. She grabbed a season-high 13
rebounds in addition to 15 points in a 73-66 win over Miami. Markwood
also recorded three blocked shots.
Other Male Nominees:
Buffalo: Ryan Bentley (wrestling, So., 3.36, business, Ripley, N.Y.)
went 3-0 on the week, including wins at Eastern Michigan and Northern
Illinois, as Buffalo improved to 6-0 on the season in dual meets.
Bentley finished the week by rebounding from a 7-0 first period deficit
to score an 11-9 win over Pitt-Johnstown's Joe Lloyd, which clinched a
19-13 victory over the defending Division II National Champions.
Bentley is now 14-7 overall and 5-1 in dual meets this season.
Toledo: Chad Kamstra (men's basketball, Sr., 3.603, accounting,
Cincinnati, Ohio) scored 15 points and added three steals and three
assists in an 88-85 overtime loss at Ball State. Kamstra scored 19
points and had three steals and two assists in Toledo's 82-79 loss to
Akron. He averaged 17 points per game and three steals per game last
week.
