Three former Mid-American Conference basketball players were selected in
American Basketball Association (ABA) 2000 Draft Tuesday in St.
Fla. ABA 2000 is a 10-team professional league that begins its first
season in November, with franchises in Albany, N.Y., Anaheim, Chicago,
Detroit, Jacksonville, Kansas City, Los Angeles, Memphis, New York,
Pittsburgh and Tampa Bay.
Shaun Stonerook was the first former MAC player selected in the draft,
selected by the Tampa Bay Thunder Dawgs in the third round, the 28th
overall pick in the draft. Stonerook finished his career at Ohio
University as a first team All-MAC selection, leading the league in
rebounding (11.7 rpg), ranking sixth in assists (4.24 apg), eighth in
steals and 12th in scoring (15.7 ppg).
Joining Stonerook in Tampa is MAC Player of the Year Anthony Stacey of
Bowling Green. Stacey was a fifth round selection (48th pick overall)
following a 1999-2000 season in which he led BGSU to a MAC
regular-season championship and NIT berth, averaging 17.0 points and 5.9
rebounds per game. In addition to finishing seventh in the league in
scoring and 17th in rebounding, Stacey was seventh in field goal
percentage (46.1%), fifth in free throw percentage (77.6%) and fifth in
steals (1.86 per game).
Casey Shaw, who graduated from Toledo in 1998, was taken as the 90th
overall pick in the 9th round of the draft. Shaw was a second round
draft selection of the NBAs Philadelphia 76ers and has been playing in
Europe for Cantu, Italy. Shaw finished his career as fourth all-time
leading scorer and fifth-leading rebounder in Toledo history, ranking
sixth in Rocket history with a .545 field goal percentage. He posted 28
double-doubles and blocked 112 shots during his collegiate career in
which he started in 112 consecutive games.
Every ABA 2000 team will head into training camp with at least 35
players on the roster. By the beginning of the season, each team must
cut their squad down to 15 players. The league will allow each team to
have a 12 man active roster, with a 3 man taxi squad.
