Future Looks Bright For MAC Wrestling

Updated 7/21/2000
Three MAC schools were recently ranked among InterMat Wrestling's top recruiting classes: Central Michigan University, Ohio University and University at Buffalo. InterMat's rankings are based on a team's ability to sign impact wrestlers and wrestlers that meet team's needs, as well as the quantity and quality of wrestlers. Wrestlers are ranked within their weight classes nationally. Ohio's recruiting class includes athletes ranked second, eighth and honorable mention in their respective weights. "The MAC is an outstanding wrestling conference and it keeps getting better each year," said Ohio Head Coach Joel Greenlee. "Kent State was ranked among the top 25 recruiting classes last year, and to have four teams ranked in the past two years is outstanding. Right now, everyone in the MAC is doing well in recruiting ranked individuals. It speaks a lot for MAC wrestling programs and the academic institutions they represent." Central Michigan posted the 16th-best recruiting class in the country, with a No. 3 and No. 4 recruit plus five honorable mentions. Ohio ranked No. 24 with a No. 2 and a No. 8 recruit plus an honorable mention. Buffalo was an honorable mention selection, with a No. 5 and No. 10-ranked recruit. Greenlee was pleased with the recognition the Bobcats and the MAC have received. "It's great to have our program recognized as one of the best in the nation in attracting young talent," he said. "We are always excited to bring in new athletes that can raise the level of competition within our program." "Everytime you bring in a top flight recruit, it makes it that much easier the next time around," said Buffalo assistant Sean Gibbs. "It sends the message that something must really be appealing about Buffalo because he decided to go there. It will hopefully have a snowball effect. These young guys are going to be a welcome addition to a team we are already extremely excited about." For the complete recruiting rankings, visit the Intermat website at www.intermatwrestle.com
