Toledo, OH (July 10, 2000) -- The University of Toledo's season-opening football game at Penn State will be televised on ESPN2. Kickoff for the Sept. 2 game is scheduled for 12:10 p.m. The Nittany Lions and Rockets will be meeting for the first time on the gridiron.
Penn State posted a 10-3 record last year, gaining its 24th Top 15 finish (28th in Top 20) under Coach Joe Paterno, earning the No. 11 ranking in the final Associated Press and USA Today/ESPN Coaches polls. The Lions return 32letterwinners and nine starters for the 2000 season, in addition to 12 players with starting experience.
Toledo was 6-5 last year, finishing second in the Mid-American Conference's West Division with a 5-3 mark. The Rockets won their last three games in 1999, including a 45-21 win over West Division champion Western Michigan in the season finale. Coach Gary Pinkel has 20 starters back this fall, including tailback and All-America candidate Chester Taylor.
Toledo Athletic Director Pete Liske lettered at quarterback for Penn State from 1961-63. Liske later enjoyed a career in professional football in both the NFL and CFL.
