MAC Women's Golfer of the Week

Gabrielle Wedding, Kent State, Fr., Wilmington, Ohio

Wedding carded a career and tournament-low 68 in the final round to win the Lady Buckeye Invitational. She scored a total of 147 (79-68) for her first collegiate individual title. Kent State won the team competition (300-297--597) with a six-stroke lead over host Ohio State (301-302--603). The second round became the final after the third round was cancelled due to rain.

Past Golfers of the Week

April 17 Breanne Hall, UT (So., Kentwood, Mich.) and Sara Boogaard, UT (So., Grand Rapids, Mich.)
Hall and Boogaard tied for sixth place at the EKU Lady Colonel Classic to lead Toledo to the tournament title (315-313-314--942) for the fourth time this season. It was the second consecutive tournament win for the Rockets. Hall shot 77-78-78--233 and Boorgaard carded 79-77-77--233.

April 10 Kelly Pickett, EMU (So., Remuera, Auckland)
Pickett became just the second EMU women's golfer to win an individual tournament when she shot 154 (75-79) to win the Bronco Invitational. Eastern Michigan placed second as a team (321-328--649) at the event.

April 3 Erica Bieniek, WMU (Jr., Scottville, Mich.)
Bieniek tied for fifth place at the William & Mary Invitational. She scored a 151 (75-76), leading the Broncos to a fifth-place (315-310--625) team finish at the event.

March 27 Martina Gillen, KSU (So., Dublin, Ireland)
Gillen led the Golden Flashes with a final round of 73 to finish in a tie for fourth place (78-76-73--227) at the Dr. Thompson Rainbow Invitational. Kent State finished in fifth place at the 12-team event with a score of 946 (319-318-309).

March 20 Breanne Hall, UT (So., Kentwood, Mich.)
Hall shot a 145 to finish in third place at the 16th Annual Snowbird Intercollegiate. She opened play with a personal-best round of 73 and finished the tournamet with a new career low of 72. She led her team to a fifth-place team finish with a score of 624 (314-310).

March 13 Jan Dowling, KSU (Sr., Bradford, Ontario)
Dowling tied for 10th place at the Central District Invitational in Parrish, Fla. on Feb. 25-26. She shot rounds of 78-73-73 for a total of 224 to lead Kent State to a 10th-place team finish in a tournament that included Ohio State, Michigan State, Texas Christian, Oklahoma and Baylor. Dowling opened the spring season with a score of 156 (78-78) to tie for eighth place at the Lady Aztec Invitational. Kent State finished third (319-314--633) as a team behind Colorado State (308-318--626) and Washington (322-306--628) and ahead of Michigan (324-319--643).

Team Notes

Eight teams head to Walden Ponds in Hamilton, Ohio for the 2002 Mid-American Conference Women's Golf Championship. Kent State is the defending team champion and has held the title for three years. The Golden Flashes won the first MAC Women's Golf Championship at King's Island in 1999 and has set scoring records every year since. KSU's Jan Dowling won the individual medal in 1999 and 2000 before teammate Martina Gillen took over the title in 2001. Gillen currently leads the MAC in scoring with a 74.89 average, followed by Dowling (76.93) and teammate Veronique Drouin (77.30). Toledo's Keli Higgins (78.29) and Breanne Hall (78.87) rank fourth and fifth, respectively.

Sophomore Keli Higgins (79-79--158) and Junior Stephanie Eifert (79-79--158) tied for 30th place at the Lady Buckeye Invitational. The pair led Toledo to a tie for ninth place (322-314--636) at the 15-team tournament. The Rockets ended the season with four tournament wins, two in the fall (Laker Invitational and Falcon Invitational) and two in the spring (Bronco Invitational and Lady Colonel Classic).
