Kent State Picked To Finish First In Gymnastics

In a close vote, Kent State edged out the competition as the preseason favorite for Mid-American Conference gymnastics, as decided by six of the seven league coaches on December 21.

Kent State, the winners of the 2001 regular season as well as the 2001 MAC Championship, finished first with 36 points. The Golden Flashes finished just two points ahead of Ball State and Central Michigan, with 34 points apiece. The Cardinals and Chippewas both finished the 2001 conference season with 3-3 records. Eastern Michigan, last season's regular season runner-up, was chosen to finish in fourth place with 28 points.

Northern Illinois, Bowling Green and Western Michigan round out the voting, seperated by one point apiece. The Huskies finished with 13 points, while the Falcons and Broncos concluded with 12 and 11 points, respectively.

Ball State and Central Michigan were also tied in the voting of the preseason favorite to win the MAC Championship on March 23. Each school received two votes, while Kent State and Bowling Green each received one.
