CLEVELAND, OH -- Kent's Karoly Bozan (men's cross country) and Ohio's Katie
Mullen (volleyball) were named the MAC Scholar Athletes of the Week on
November 15, 1999.
Mullen (Sr., 3.42, management information systems, Bellevue, Wash.) had
two double-doubles this weekend in victories over Western Michigan and
Northern Illinois. She combined for 25 digs in the two matches, a team
Bozan (Jr., 3.40, pre-business, Cegled, Hungary) placed 20th at the NCAA
Great Lakes Regional Championship in Terre Haute, Ind., with a time of
31:17.70. He was the top MAC finisher at the meet.
The honor is presented to a MAC male and female student-athlete who has
a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and performs well
during that week's competition. The winners are selected by one of the
conference's faculty athletic representatives.
Ball State: Emily Sallee (volleyball, Jr., 3.71, elementary education,
Muncie, Ind.) became Ball State's all-time leader in assists in
Saturday's victory at Central Michigan. She recorded 51 assists in a
four-game win on Wednesday over Bowling Green and totaled 61 at CMU.
She now has a career total of 4,430 assists, which breaks Wendy Carter's
(1992-96) previous standard of 4,404. Sallee is averaging 52 assists
per match and enters this week with 1,498 assists for the season. She
set BSU's single-season standard with 1,545 assists in 1998.
Eastern Michigan: Jill Hutton (volleyball, Sr., 3.05, criminal justice,
Kingsville, Ontario) posted 38 kills in two matches, with a .386 hitting
percentage, leading the Eagles to a road win at Central Michigan and a
3-0 win over Bowling Green to lock up a spot in the MAC tournament. She
had 21 kills and a .500 hitting percentage at CMU and followed that with
17 kills against Bowling Green. She also added three service aces, 10
digs and eight blocks in seven games over the week. She currently leads
the team in career-block assists (386) and total blocks (476).
Ohio: Brian Billips (men's swimming & diving, Sr., 3.74, sports
industry/psychology, Pickerington, Ohio) won the one-meter and
three-meter diving events in the Bobcats' 130.50-112.50 win over
Denison. He had an NCAA qualifying score of 300.85 in the meet.
Toledo: Todd France (football, So., 3.97, mechanical engineering,
Maumee, Ohio) kicked three field goals in Toledo's 44-14 win over
Northern Illinois. He was also perfect on five PATs. France's field
goals of 27, 42 and 59 yards helped the Rockets to a 23-14 lead before
scoring three touchdowns in the fourth quarter. Ashley Clark
(volleyball, Sr., 3.55, primary education, LaPorte, Ind.) registered a
.368 attack percentage and 13.5 assists per game in last week's action.
She also averaged 4.0 digs per game with 20 against Youngstown State.
