OPELIKA, Ala. (AP)(June 3) - Charles Howell all but took care of the individual title in the first nine holes.

That left only piece of unfinished business for the Oklahoma State junior - winning the team title. Howell and the Cowboys turned in record-setting performances then won the NCAA Championship in a one-hole playoff with Georgia Tech on Saturday.

"I wanted to do this as an individual, but it wouldn't have meant half as much if the team didn't win it," said Howell, whose 23-under 265 total shattered the tournament record.

"When I looked at the leaderboard after nine holes, I totally forgot about the individual thing."

At that point, he had a seven-stroke lead over Texas sophomore David Gossett. The team wasn't doing as well, with the Yellow Jackets storming back from eight shots down to take a five-stroke lead after 14 holes.

It was the Cowboys' ninth team title and first since 1995. They lost a five-shot lead to Georgia on the final day last year.

"Every time we win I think this will probably be the last one," coach Mike Holder said. "About halfway through today I thought, 'I don't know how much more of these I can take."'

Oklahoma State lost a one-shot lead after Landry Mahan sent his approach shot over the 18th green and into the bleachers. He two-putted for bogey.

Then, Howell also overshot the green into nearly the same spot. He managed to save par with a 4-foot putt after a brief conversation with his father in the gallery.

"My Dad said, "We're all tied,' so I knew I had to make it," Howell said.

That set up the sudden-death playoff, played on the 18th hole. The Yellow Jackets had four pars and a bogey on the par-4 hole.

Freshman J.C. DeLeon birdied for the Cowboys, who also had four pars.

"I was more nervous than I've ever been in my life," said DeLeon, who was 4 over on the day. "We played a two-hole playoff in Las Vegas earlier this year, and I hit the two worst drives of my life."

It was the second playoff in NCAA history. In 1995, Oklahoma State beat Tiger Woods and Stanford.

Both teams beat UNLV's two-year-old record of 34-under par by three strokes, a mark also tied by Arizona. The Wildcats went 33-under the final two rounds, including a 14-under 274 on Saturday, to finish two strokes back.

Houston finished six shots back (30-under 1,122) on the strength of the day's best round of 16 under.

Howell shot a 3-under 69 and was the only golfer to score in the 60s all four rounds. The old championship mark was 17 under matched three times.

"He played golf like I've never seen for 72 holes," Holder said. "I've had the privilege of coaching great players, and that performance he put on was surreal."

Houston's Chris Morris shot a 66 to finished second, eight shots back.

Three players tied for third at 13-under 275: Northwestern's Jess Daley, Arizona's Ricky Barnes and David Gossett of Texas.

Gossett, who entered the day three strokes off the lead, shot a 76.

Georgia Tech, which was 28th of 30 teams last year, also finished second in 1993. The Yellow Jackets lost by a stroke in regulation to Florida.

"I just told them we were closer at 4 o'clock than we were at 7 a.m.," Yellow Jackets coach Bruce Heppler said of his pre-playoff speech. "It was gravy at that point."

Sophomore Matt Weibring wasn't so sure.

"It's tougher the farther you go," said Weibring, who finished with a 67 and was 12 under for the tournament for sixth place.

"When you lose by a playoff, it hurts just that much more than if you lost by eight strokes. (But) I wouldn't trade it for the world."

Divots: This marked the first time the individual champion played on the team winner since 1990, when Arizona State and Phil Mickelson did it ... Arizona's Derek Gillespie aced the par-3, 208-yard 8th hole. The hole-in-one was the second of the tournament, joining TCU's Jamie Kellam ... Howell was Oklahoma State's seventh individual NCAA champion. The last was E.J. Pfister in 1988. Howell's 69.57 stroke average is a school record, breaking the mark of 70.7 set by Lindy Miller and Bob Tway.
