Payne scored on a 1-yard run in the second quarter, and had TD runs of 13 and 20 yards five minutes apart in the fourth period after Miami (3-2, 2-1 Mid-American)
trimmed Akron's 17-point lead to 23-20.
Smith, who leads the nation with eight interceptions in five games, had one early in the fourth quarter to stall a Miami drive.
Zac Derr kicked first-half field goals of 38, 34 and 38 yards and Butchie Washington threw a 66-yard touchdown pass to Jake Schifino to give the Zips (3-2, 2-1) a
Steve Little's 5-yard TD run and Andy Dooley's 2-yard TD run - both in the third quarter - made it 23-20.
Little rushed for 128 yards on 17 carries. Mike Bath completed 20 of 249 passes for 174 yards with two interceptions for Miami.
Schifino caught three passes for 123 yards.
