CLEVELAND, OH - Akron's Jon Eaton (football) and Ball State's Sally
Northcroft (field hockey) were named the MAC Scholar Athletes of the
Week on November 2, 1999.
Northcroft (Sr., 3.56, physical education, Harara, Zimbabwe) broke the
NCAA single-season scoring record for goals in leading BSU to a 3-1
victory over Louisville, which earned the Cardinals a share of their
seventh straight and unprecedented 16th overall MAC regular-season
title. Her record-breaking shot came with 14:13 left in the first
period on a direct corner play. Northcroft was also responsible for
both of BSU's goals in a 2-1 win over Miami on Friday. Her 49 goals,
100 points and 5.25 scoring average top the national rankings. She is
also third on the NCAA's all-time list for career goals with 123 and
fourth in career points with 263.
Eaton (Sr., 3.07, biology, Wheelersburg, Ohio) recorded a game-high 10
tackles (nine solo) against Western Michigan, marking the third time in
the last four weeks that he has led the team in stops. Eaton also
punted seven times for an average of 47.6 yards, including a 74-yarder.
The honor is presented to a MAC male and female student-athlete who has
a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and performs well
during that week's competition. The winners are selected by one of the
conference's faculty athletic representatives.

Akron: Michelle Rizzo (women's cross country, So., 3.25, business,
Painesville, Ohio) won the MAC Championship at Kent on Saturday, leading
the Zips to their first MAC team title. The finish earned Rizzo a spot
on the All-MAC First Team.
Kent: Joel Reikowski (football, Fr.-R, 3.09, chemistry, New Berlin,
Wis.) had two catches for 14 yards, including a five-yard catch for a
touchdown in Kent's 41-20 victory over Buffalo on Saturday. He was part
of the Kent offense that gained 581 yards of total offense, 34 first
downs and 296 passing yards against the Bulls.
Miami: Andy Brumbergs (football, Fr.-R, 3.69, accountancy, Solon, Ohio)
extended his consecutive field goal string to six by drilling three
field goals (42, 30 and 41) and all three of his PAT attempts in Miami's
52-42 loss to Cincinnati. His first two field goals helped Miami open
up a quick 6-0 lead over the Bearcats within the first five minutes of
the game. Brubergs has now converted six of nine field goal attempts
and 26 of 27 attempts this year. His 12 points were a single-game
career best. Jennifer Eaton (volleyball, Fr.-R, 3.84, zoology,
Cincinnati, Ohio) was a key offensive weapon as Miami captured a
much-needed win in its lone match of the week against Marshall to boost
its record to 8-4 in the MAC and claiming the top spot in the East
Division. Avenging an earlier loss to the Herd, Eaton nailed 12 kills
and recorded an impressive .579 hitting percentage playing mostly in the
front row. She averaged 3.00 kills per game and had only one hitting
error in 19 attacks. She also was a vital part of the Hawks' defensive
effort, knocking down four blocks to help Miami register 11.0 blocks for
the match.
Ohio: Joe Sherrill (football, Fr.-R, 3.12, biology/pre-med, Cincinnati,
Ohio) helped Ohio to a 37-25 win over Ball State posting his second
100-yard rushing game in as many starts. He rushed for 122 yards on 16
carries and had a 47-yard rush that set up a Chad Brinker-score in the
second quarter, and averaged 7.6 yards per carry. Kim Van Selm
(swirmming & diving, So., 3.18, biology/physical therapy. Durban, South
Africa) won three events to pace Ohio to a 130-113 win at Ohio State to
open the season. She won the 200 free with a time of 1:53.12 and had
nearly an 11-second advantage as she won the 500 free in a time of
4:59.74. She also won the 1000 free by just over 11 seconds with a time
of 10:18.82.
Toledo: Dave Marhefka (men's cross country, Sr., 3.09, math, Westlake,
Ohio) finished 33rd at the MAC Championships at Kent on Saturday. He
was the Rockets' top runner at every meet during the season. Sara
Vergote (women's cross country, So., 3.77, exercise science, Kalkaska,
Mich.) placed 41st at the MAC Championships.
