Mid-American Conference announces Tennis Players of the Week

Eastern Michigan and Buffalo Student- Athletes Recognized as Mid-American Conference Players of the Week

Cleveland - Eastern Michigan's Lisa D'Amelio and Buffalo's Randy Rocchio represented their respective institutions as the first honorees of the 2003 tennis season as tennis players of the week. The league office will select a player of the week every week throughout the 2003 season.`

MAC Women's Tennis Player of the Week

Lisa D'Amelio, Eastern Michigan (Sr., Melbourne, Australia) defeated Caroline Lay at No. 1 singles, 7-6 (4), 6-4 and teamed with Rebecca Hawkins to defeat Michigan State's No. 1 doubles team of Caroline Lay and Keri Thompson, 8-4, to lead Eastern Michigan to a 5-2 dual meet win over the 70th ranked MSU Spartans.

Other Women's Nominations

Susie Schoenberger, Bowling Green (So., Upper Arlington, Ohio) split her four matches on the week winning at the top singles and the top doubles flights as the Falcons swept Youngstown State, 7-0. She defeated YSU's Whitney Thomas (6-4, 6-2) in singles action, and teamed with junior Lisa Maloney to top Thomas and Heather Hagood in doubles play (8-5). Schoenberger dropped matches at the top singles and the top doubles flights at Michigan State Friday, as the #70-ranked Spartans beat BGSU by a 7-0 count.

Megan Zimpfer, Miami (Jr., Centerville, Ohio) went 3-1 overall (2-0 in No. 1 doubles and 1-1 in No. 1 singles) in Miami's 6-1 and 7-0 victories over Dayton and Wright State, respectively. After losing against Dayton (6-4, 6-4 (10-8)), Zimpfer lost just two games versus Wright State (6-0, 6-2).

MAC Men's Tennis Player of the Week

Randy Rocchio, Buffalo (So., East Amherst, N.Y.) went 3-0 at the St. Bonaventure duals to lead the Bulls to a 2-1 record over the weekend. Rocchio did not lose a set during the tournament as he won two matches at number three and one at number five, a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Binghamton's Jordan Steinberg.
