MAC GYMNASTS OF THE WEEK

Marny Oestreng, Bowling Green
Senior - Trugstad, Norway

Oestreng earned four first-place finishes to lead Bowling Green over Central Michigan. Oestreng tallied first-place marks of 9.700 on the vault, 9.925 on the floor and 9.850 on the bars. Oestreng also tallied a top-five finish of 9.725 on the beam, en route to a 39.200 winning performance on the all-around.

Heather Langham, Kent State
Senior - Concord, Ohio

Langham snatched first place honors on the floor during both of the Golden Flashes meets this past weekend. She notched a career-best 9.950 on the floor and scored a 9.875 on the bars, tying for first in both events against EMU. Against No. 25 NC State, Langham won the all-around with a 39.150, winning the floor (9.900) and finishing second on the bars (9.800)

OTHER NOTABLE PERFORMANCES

Amy Bodus, Ball State
Junior - Waukesha, Wisconsin

Bodus won the all-around competition with a 38.875, plus claimed a first-place finish on the vault with a 9.800. Bodus also claimed a second-place tie on the bars with a 9.775 as the Cardinals defeated Western Michigan and Illinois-Chicago. All three of Bodus' top-ranking scores were season-high marks.

Kara Reighard, Central Michigan
Freshman - Mt. Pleasant, Michigan

Reighard led the Chippewas for the third straight week in the all-around competition, posting a season-high 38.800 to finish second. Reighard also notched season-best marks on the floor (9.750) and beam (9.825). The freshman also claimed second place honors on the beam and third on the vault with a 9.650.

Natalie Hashimoto, Eastern Michigan
Junior - Scarborough, Ontario

Hashimoto won the all-around competition with a mark of 39.325 at Kent State, setting season-high on the floor (9.925) and a year-best mark of 9.800 on both the beam and bars. The only Eagle to compete in the all-around competition, Hashimoto rounded out her top all-around mark with a 9.800 on the vault.

TEAM NOTES

Ball State: Ball State scored the eighth highest team total in school history, en route to a first-place finish at the Western Michigan Triangular. The Cardinals finished 1.575 points ahead of WMU and 3.500 points ahead of Illinois-Chicago. Ball State captured the all-around title (Amy Bodus), as well as three individual titles, with each title claimed by a different BSU gymnast. Amy Bodus claimed the top spot on vault, Renee Planck was the top scorer on the beam and Quiana Williams took home the top prize on the floor. Williams tallied a career-best 9.825, on her way to winning the floor.

Bowling Green: Bowling Green mentor Daniel Connelly defeated Central Michigan for the first timed in his six-year career at BGSU on January 19, as the Falcons overtook the Chippewas 194.225-192.200. This also marks the first time since the 1987-88 season that Bowling Green defeated CMU during the regular season. Senior Marny Oestreng led the Falcons with four first place finishes, including the all-around.

Central Michigan: Central Michigan posted a season-high team score of 192.200 and on the floor (48.800) in the loss to Bowling Green. CMU also set many personal season-best marks during the meet. Freshman Kara Reighard posted season-highs on the all-around beam and floor exercise. Freshman Laura McLaren made her Chippewa debut, posting a 9.650 on the bars and a 9.425 on the floor. Also making her season start was junior Michele Orloski, who finished fourth on the floor with a 9.800, tying teammate, Tiffani Berra, who matched her career high. Freshman Sara Burtinsky notched three season-high marks on the vault, bars and beam. Sarah Nelson tallied a season-high score on the bars, while Bethany Couturier and Shanna Duggan each posted personal high scores on the beam.

Eastern Michigan: The Eagles scored 194.700 points in a loss to Kent State (196.200) on January 18. The Eagles claimed the top score on the beam with a combined mark of 48.425. The Eagles are currently ranked 13th in nation and tied for ninth on the floor exercise and seventh on the vault in the January 21 GymInfo rankings.

Kent State: The Golden Flashes went 2-0 in weekend action. In the 196.200-194.700 victory over conference rival Eastern Michigan, KSU placed four team scores in the program's all-time team record books. Kent State tied the school mark on the floor, with a 49.425. The Golden Flashes finished with a vault score of 49.225 to rank second all-time and the tally from the uneven bars (48.975) and the overall team score (196.200) now stand at fifth in the KSU records. Kent State continued their winning ways two days later, dropping 25th-ranked North Carolina State.

Northern Illinois: NIU picked up its first victory of the season with a 185.900-180.400 triumph over Wisconsin-LaCrosse on January 18. The Huskies finished second to host Southeast Missouri State (188.600), which was a homecoming for NIU coaches Mark Sontag and Kris Buchheister. Sontag was an assistant at SEMO for nine seasons, including two under then-Southeast Missouri State head coach Buchheister. The Huskies posted their highest mark of the season on the bars with a 46.850 - placing two gymnasts in the top five. For the third meet in a row, freshman Kristina Campos led the Huskies in the all-around with a 37.625, including two top-five finishes on the vault (9.575) and bars (9.600).

Western Michigan: Western Michigan finished second at the Bronco Triangular, posting a season-best team total of 192.925. The Broncos claimed a year-high score of 48.675 on the floor exercise, as a trio of WMU gymnasts earned a 9.775. Senior Kristen Maul finished posted a four event total of 38.775 to finish second in her first outing as an all-around competitor. Maul also tallied a team-best 9.800 on the uneven bars. Fellow senior, Amy DeYoung, garnered a third-place finish with a career-best 9.725 on the bars and a 38.725 in the all-around for a third-place finish.

Preseason Poll: In a close vote, Kent State edged out the competition as the preseason favorite for Mid-American Conference gymnastics, as decided by the league coaches on December 21. Kent State, the winners of the 2001 regular season as well as the 2001 MAC Championship, finished first with 42 points. The Golden Flashes finished just three points ahead of Ball State, who earned 39. Central Michigan finished third in the voting with 37 points. The Cardinals and Chippewas both finished the 2001 conference season with 3-3 records. Eastern Michigan, last season's regular season runner-up, was chosen to finish in fourth place with 32 points. Western Michigan, Northern Illinois and Bowling Green rounded out the voting, seperated by just four points. The Broncos concluded with 18 points, while the Huskies and Falcons tied with 14points apiece.
