Ohio, Marshall and Toledo Student-Athletes Recognized as MAC Players of the Week

CLEVELAND (Jan. 2, 2001) -- Ohio's Patrick Flomo and Marshall's Tamar Slay were selected as the Mid-American Conference East Division men's basketball Player of the Week awards for the sixth (Dec. 25) and seventh (Jan. 1) weeks, respectively, of the 2000-01 season, while Toledo's Greg Stempin was honored as the West Division Player of the Week for both weeks.

MAC East Division Player of the Week - (for Dec. 25)
Ohio University's Patrick Flomo (6-8, F,, Jr., Columbus, Ohio)

Flomo helped the Bobcats to wins over West Virginia (79-67) and Oakland (92-85) as Ohio snapped its four-game losing streak. Flomo averaged 19 points and 10.5 rebounds. Against Oakland, he led the Bobcats back from a 14-point deficit by scoring 22 of his 29 points in the second half. Versus the Mountaineers, he was a perfect 4-of-4 from the field and recorded five blocked shots.

MAC East Division Player of the Week - (for Jan. 1)
Marshall University's Tamar Slay (6-8, G, Jr., Beckley, W.Va.)

Slay averaged 23.5 points and 4.5 rebounds per game as the Herd beat IUPU Fort Wayne (99-70) and Buffalo (85-75 in overtime). In the Herd's MAC opening win over the Bulls, Slay produced 28 points, seven rebounds, four steals, two assists and one blocked shot.

MAC West Division Player of the Week - (Dec. 25 and Jan. 1)
Toledo's Greg Stempin (6-8, F, Sr., Macomb, Ill.)

For the week of Dec 25, Stempin posted 18.3 points and 7.3 rebounds as the Rockets lost at Fresno State (88-72), beat Samford (80-74 in double ot) and lost to Xavier (63-61). For the week of Jan. 1, Stempin led UT to a 69-66 triumph over No. 19 ranked Cincinnati. In addition to scoring the winning basket to put UT ahead 67-66, Stempin blocked a shot with five seconds left to preserve the win. Stempin added nine rebounds and shot 9-of-17 versus the Bearcats.

West Division Player of the Week nominations

Dec 25 - Central Michigan's David Webber (18 ppg, 3.5 rpg, 4.0 apg, 2.0 spg) as Chippewas went 1-1; Eastern Michigan's Shamar Herron (14.5 ppg, 6.5 rpg, 2.0 apg, 1.5 bs) as the Eagles went 1-1.

Jan. 1 - Ball State's Cedric Moodie (career-high 29 points, nine rebounds versus IUPU Ft. Wayne); Eastern Michigan's Ricky Cottrill (20 points at Michigan).

East Division Player of the Week nominations

Dec 25 - Akron's Rashon Brown (15.5 ppg, 6.0 apg, 3.0 rpg) for the 1-1 Zips; Buffalo's Robert Brown (15.5 ppg, 6.5 rpg, 3.0 apg) named to the South Florida All-Tournament team as the Bulls went 1-1; Kent State's Demetric Shaw (14.3 ppg, 5.0 rpg, 2.3 spg) for the 2-1 Golden Flashes, who finished third at the San Juan Shootout.

Jan. 1 - Buffalo's Damien Foster (24 points, six rebounds, two assists versus Marshall); Ohio's Anthony Jones (30 points versus Arizona State; 16 points, 10 rebounds versus Pepperdine) for the 1-1 Bobcats.
