    Kent State Tops Northwestern, 67-58

    CAROLINA, Puerto Rico (AP) - Kyrem Massey and Andrew Mitchell scored 14 points each to help Kent State beat Northwestern, 67-58, on Wednesday (Dec. 20) in the opening round of the San Juan Shootout.

    Trevor Huffman added 11 points for Kent State (6-2), which will face Nebraska on Thursday. The Cornhuskers advanced with an 81-80 victory over Iona.

    Tavaras Hardy led Northwestern (4-5) with 18 points and four blocked shots, and Ed McCants


    Eastern Michigan Loses To Chicago State, 71-60

    YPSILANTI, Mich. (AP) - Tony Jones scored 23 points on 10-of-17 shooting and Chicago State held Eastern Michigan to 39 percent from the field in a 71-60 victory Wednesday night.

    The Cougars (3-5) finished with a 48-31 rebounding advantage over the Eagles (1-6), including an 18-9 edge on the offensive glass.

    Darrell Johns, Randy Nelson and Kin Yanders scored 10 points apiece for Chicago State. Johns grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds, Nelson scored seven consecutive points to extend a late 50-48 Cougars lead and Yanders made 8-of-9 free throws.

    Junior center Shamar Herron got his first start of the season and responded with 18 points for Eastern. Melvin Hicks added 13 points for the Eagles.


    Toledo Defeats Samford, 80-74, In Double-Overtime

    FRESNO, Calif. (AP) - Terry Reynolds scored 24 points to lead Toledo to a 80-74 double overtime victory over Samford in the consolation game of the Trend Homes Classic on Wednesday night (Dec. 20).

    Toledo (7-2) dominated the first half but then went cold from the field in the second, allowing Samford (3-6) to rally. Greg Stempin added 19 points and Robierre Cullars 14 for Toledo.

    Marc Salyers had a game-high 28 for Samford, including a long 3-pointer at the end of the first overtime to force the second OT. Derrick Jones scored 17 for the Bulldogs before fouling out in the first overtime.

    Stempin hit his first four shots to help Toledo take a 15-2 lead. The Rockets led 39-24 at halftime, but Samford opened the second half on a 23-8 to tie 47-47.

    Salyers had a basket and four free throws to help Samford take its first lead at 55-53, and Jones hit a 3 and a layup to tie it with six seconds remaining in regulation.

    Toledo took a 66-62 lead in the first overtime, but a three by Tyson Dorsey cut the margin to one. Reynolds hit a pair of free throws with 15 seconds remaining, but Salyers hit a 3 to force the second overtime.

    Reynolds hit a 3 to give Toledo a 71-68 lead, but Dorsey countered with a 3 for Samford.

    Two baskets, including a 3, by Nick Moore gave Toledo a 5-point lead. Stempin added a free throw and Craig Rodgers scored to put Toledo up by eight with 1:30 left. Samford went scoreless over the final minute.
