TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) (March 1, 2000) -- A layup by Justin Hall 23 seconds into the
second overtime put Toledo ahead for good as the Rockets defeated
Northern Illinois 68-64 in
the first round of the Mid-American Conference tournament on March 1.
Toledo (18-12) plays Ball State in Sunday's quarterfinals at Gund Arena
in Cleveland.
Hall's basket made it 64-62. Craig Rodgers followed with a layup with
3:57 left and a free throw at the 3:01 mark to increase the margin to
five points.
Toledo had tied the game at 62 by scoring the final three points of the
first overtime on a free throw by Rodgers with 39 seconds left and a
jumper by Greg Stempin
five seconds later. T.J. Lux, the leading scorer in the regular season
for Northern Illinois (13-15), had fouled out with 43 seconds left in
the extra period.
Toledo's Chad Kamstra made six 3-pointers and scored all his 27 points
in regulation play. Stempin added 15, while Hall led Toledo in rebounds
with 14 and
assists with six.
Leon Rodgers scored 16, Rey Jones 15 and Lux 12 for Northern Illinois.
Lux also had 15 rebounds.
Toledo scored the first nine points, but Northern Illinois led 26-22 at
halftime. A basket by Lux with 44 seconds left in regulation tied the
score at 56 to force
overtime.
