MAC Men's Basketball Tournament Pairings Announced

CLEVELAND, OHIO -- The seeds for the MAC 2000 Men's Basketball Tournament are set following completion of regular season play on Saturday.

The Bowling Green State University Falcons (22-6, 14-4) won the outright Mid-American Conference championship and earned the #1 seed in the 2000 Mid-American Conference First Energy men's basketball tournament by defeating Marshall, 88-83, tonight.

Ball State (19-8, 11-7) and Toledo (17-12, 11-7) shared the West Division title, however the Cardinals won the tiebreaker that vaulted them into the #2 seed and a first-round bye. Kent (21-6, 13-5) was awarded the third bye with the third best overall conference record.

Four other teams were tied with 11-7 records. The tiebreaker system had Akron (17-10, 11-7) as the #4 seed. The Zips will host #13 Central Michigan (5-22, 2-16) in a first-round game Wednesday, March 1, at 7:30 p.m. from the JAR in Akron, Ohio.

Marshall (19-8, 11-7) is the #5 seed and will host #12 Buffalo (5-22, 3-15) with a 7:05 p.m. tipoff from the Henderson Center in Huntington, W.Va.

The Ohio Bobcats (18-12, 11-7) are the #6 seed and play host to #11 Western Michigan (10-17, 6-12) with a 7:00 tipoff from the Convocation Center in Athens, Ohio.

Toledo (17-12, 11-7) the #7 seed, takes a 10-game winning streak into its first-round game against #10 seed Northern Illinois (13-14, 7-11) in the confines of Savage Hall on the UT campus.

Eastern Michigan (15-12, 9-9), the #8 seed, hosts #9 Miami (12-14, 8-10) with a 7:00 start at the Convocation Center.

The three teams receiving byes and the five winners of the first-round games will advance to Cleveland's Gund Arena for the quarterfinal, semi-final and championship rounds on March 5, 6 and 8 respectively.
